I never realized how disgusting the bananas we eat are until now!

The banana that you eat probably look like this (see below).  This is the Cavendish banana.

Cavendish dominate the commercial banana production after the Panama disease wiped out the Gros Michel banana in the 1950.

And this is the Gros Michel banana.

Anyway, I ate the Gros Michel banana and realize how delicious it is!  It is so smooth, sweet, and tasty.

Then I went back to eating the Cavendish and realize how disgusting it is.

Gros Michel are nasty compared to the bananas I'm growing. I don't even know what kind they are but they are fatter and stubbier than the Gros Michel but they taste so much better.

Post some photos.

I wouldn't call them disgusting, but yes I've heard the Gros Michel variety are much better. They were actually the standard banana back in the 50s and earlier before they got nearly wiped out by Panama Disease (all of the bananas we eat are clones so a disease that affects one variety will kill them all). What's really good is a tree ripened banana though, compared to the stuff we buy in stores that are picked green.

Mutant bananas?

yeah, people exaggerate always

As it says in the article, this is because bananas are triploid - they have three copies of every chromosome instead of the normal two. So during meiosis, which is required for making seeds, you end up with a bunch of unpaired chromosomes. This sets off alarms in the cell and causes it to stop even trying to proceed. The little black specks in your banana are aborted seeds.

This was NOT done by deliberate genetic modification, incidentally, seeing as how the Cavendish cultivar has been around since 1836. It was a natural, spontaneous change that was then selected for.

we have 3 types of bananas growing, and the bananas from them are awesome, only about 1/3rd of the size of a regular one in the store, but it's like concentrated flavor.  the bunches are huge tho, probably 50-70 bananas per bunch.  one had almost 100 on it.

i forgot the names, if i get home and remember, i'll look them up
