Cisco 2960 SI PoE-48 and AIR AP1142N-A-K9 Programmed for a Home Network

I recently bought the switch and five of the AP's for $150. I am wanting to get this gear programmed and running my network at home. I work as a AV Technician/Consultant and have very little IT knowledge compared to most people here on the forum. A lot of the equipment we install is IP but again we are just using the bare bones basics to get our gear up and running.

 

With that said, I have gotten the switch reset to factory. I have watched a few videos on some basic things to configure on the switch.

 

 

It seems like it passes internet fine but I really don't know if it set up correctly. So I moved onto the AP's. It seems like I can get them reset.

After that I am falling on my face. Just to be clear these ARE NOT the lightweight models. They are the AP1142N. I have had this gear hooked up to my combination cable modem/wifi router with the modem acting as the DHCP and the AP was getting an IP address. I tried typing in that ip address in the address bar and never get the GUI. I have also tried to set the ip address of the AP using the console port and the configure terminal command does not work.

 

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

To get the aironet's up and running you have to have the BVI Ethernet and subinterface showing status "UP" in


Show IP Int Br

After which you can use the web ui to setup the Aironet access point or Cisco Configuration Professional.

It does give me a status of "UP". There is no ip address assigned.

 

To set the BVI1 ip address, do I need to be in Global Configurator mode using the "configure terminal" command? If yes that is one of my problems. The AP is not recognizing the "configure terminal" command.

Here is what you need to do.

First unplug it from the switch and plug it into a real network. (that will eliminate the switch)


Then login to the ap via ssh or console and add the following in config terminal mode.

Replaceing the ips with those for your network. After you do this you should be able to access the web page for the device by putting the ip into the browser.


From there you can use Cisco Configuration Professional to set things up using a GUI.

That looks like the output from the access point not the switch.  it is looking for an access point controller. If you cant plug the AP into a working network then you should start with the switch.

 

Look at the config there should be at least 1 vlan which you need to assign a management IP address to. The config I posted is for the same model AP1142N so if you paste it into the console port via hyperterminal it should work.

 

Do you have the access points connected to your PC via their console ports (Serial) ?

Yes you are correct. Right now I am hooked up to the AP console port with the serial cable.

 

And no I have not set up any vlan on the switch. In the first video I posted above he does something with a vlan. I am not sure if that is what you are wanting me to do. I know nothing. Step by step videos like the one posted above is all I have looked at. I am just doing what they do and not really knowing exactly what is really happening.

Well if you use hyperterminal or putty to  connect to the cisco AP using the console cable and then enter config mode you can just paste in this code here

 

The only things you need to change are the IP addresses, Access point names and passwords that you want for your home network.

 

The switch is much easier to configure if you connect to that and enter Show Run it should give the config post that here removing any passwords and I can show what to do in order to get that setup also.

 

I was the same when I started but this is a great way to learn.

It sounds like you might have the "wrong" software version.

 

If I remember rightly there are two versions. Lightweight (LWAPP I think) and Autonomous (CAPWAP)

 

Lightweight boots up and looks for a Cisco WLC (Wireless LAN controller), Autonomous has the Web GUI of which you speak.

Yeah someone has loaded the controller based firmware (LWAPP image) onto it.

 

You need to flash it with  c1140-k9w7-tar.153-3.JD3.tar

There are lots of places to download cisco software. The only "official" place would be cisco - and yes for some software you need to have an account that is backed by a support contract with them, or licensing, etc.

I know quit a few places.. :shiftyninja: None of which are something that should be posted here - nor would I give them to you in PM, so don't bother..  There are few people here I have shared such info, but its clearly against this boards policy, etc.  And no offense but 12 posts..
