+John. Subscriber¹ Posted May 8, 2017 Subscriber¹ Share Posted May 8, 2017 Amazon would be an easy start. An easier one would be to switch to a more readily available printer type. You can get a cheap printer for $30 these days. minimeau 1 Share

Dude those died off years and years ago.. Has your client/friend been living in a cave? Do you even need a paper copy of the invoice.. What sort of business is this? This. I would imagine this is a small business, and the owner is older, and is speaking out of a very very small frame of knowledge. He is suggesting insisting the only solution he knows of, is the only solution. This used to be so very frustrating when I was a tech, having to deal with this line of thinking. ANNOYING ANECDOTE: When I was a tech @ a local repair shop, we had the most annoying customer of all time (I am willing to bet money on this) - he came in all the time and claim "I need a hacker... IE 6.0 was the best browser, and microsoft is stupid for changing it" (let that soak in) His sole reason for this black hole density was that IE6 was the only browser that would let him view a certain homegrown website that would show lottery results from many states... yeah. So every month or so, he would ask if we could "hack Windows, or hack the website, so he could use IE6" We were going to build some budget desktop system for him, and he wanted to back out of it because it didn't have IE6 on it (was windows 7), when he would come in, we'd ask what his email address was, so we could pull up his account, his reply: In a loud, booming, boastful manner, ".. I have 5 of them, all of them have "Colonel" in it, which one do you want ?" Im sure the diabetes removed him from the gene pool by now. helpifIcan
Talk about the 80's I just leased a car last June and the state lease form is a 3 sheet form THEY require. So sure enough they ran it through a dot matrix printer. Unbelievable.

Mindovermaster Global Moderator Posted May 10, 2017 Global Moderator Share Posted May 10, 2017 (edited) It wasn't the loudest I ever heard. But it was louder than our loud era 1993 printer.
sc302 Veteran Posted May 10, 2017 Veteran Share Posted May 10, 2017 You could do that "invoice" in excel and print a million copies of it on a laser or ink jet printer. Would take me no time at all to do. Even better would be an actual invoicing program. Honestly, the maintenance and pain of installing a dot matrix printer isn't worth it. The interface would be parallel port, if you can find a printer with an Ethernet port that would be better being that most computers these days are not sold with a parallel port. This is not a direction I recommend going down, alignment is going to be painful, after you get it functioning. These things are failing faster than you can replace toner in a printer. You are wrong about 1998...but yea. Probably 2008 or right around windows 7. Vista computers still had parallel ports. I remember being able to buy new dot matrix printers around that time, had to for a special case scenario simply due to cost running in a government facility and the sheer amount of paper used....way more cost effective, even now. Those new printers had a functional life of less than a year.

That is incorrect, you can still purchase "modern day" dot matrix printers through retail stores, those come equipped with USB connections. Yep, you can get them from staples.com but they don't look to be carried in the stores (every one I click on was online only).

Interesting, I only brought it up because I remembered seeing this thread and last night at while I was at my local microcenter I saw an epson for sale and took note of the connectors.
