+Warwagon MVC Posted May 30, 2017 MVC Share Posted May 30, 2017 So I was watching a Harry's Razer review, and the guy said he watched this particular video on how to make your disposable razors last longer. He said it really works. I haven't tried it yet, but if someone wants to try it and see if it works Link to comment https://www.neowin.net/forum/topic/1332062-how-to-possibly-sharpen-and-reuse-your-razor-blades-for-years/ Share on other sites
Circaflex
Waste of time IMO, the time spent could be put towards something else for me. Three years ago I switched to a safety razor and haven't looked back. I picked up a 100 pack of blades for under 10 dollars. It takes about 20 seconds lol. I'm totally going to try this!!! I figure no need filling up the landfill with razer blades. You also get a much better shave with less skin irritation. Circaflex
And how often do you do have to do this? I just dont see the need to do this when a replacement is a few cents. But he's not shaving his arms, he pushing the razor the opposite direction up his arms & claims this sharpens the razor. I mean, I am no scientitian, but it sounds plausible. Are you referring to the razor, or the blades ? I think my razor was free - the executive blades come every month - a pkg of 4 @ $9.00. To me, it seemed like a no brainer considering the blades I used to buy were close to $8.00 per blade & these are just as good. 17 hours ago, Lamp0 said: I mean, I am no scientitian, but it sounds plausible. T3X4S
This is interesting, if the person is being truthful, he did a microscopic pic of before/after using the method & shows the results. Now, it is far from scientific, he did not show the actualy process and only showed the "results" - so take with a grain of salt. Process is apparently called "stropping" Link to comment https://www.neowin.net/forum/topic/1332062-how-to-possibly-sharpen-and-reuse-your-razor-blades-for-years/#findComment-597909948 Share on other sites

Thor? only thing he could possibly be doing is cleaning the gunk off the leading edge. use shaving oil and clean the razor every stroke....same effect. Process is apparently called "stropping" stropping is a term for leatherwork post sharpening your knives, not that different from that claim, you use a leather strop and light oil, to deburr the leading edge of a blade, it doesnt sharpen it, it just smooths the leading edge, doesnt feel as ragged but is no sharper than before. done the same process for 13years as a leatherworker (before i went into IT) on my craftsmen blades, sharpen on topside of "strop" with fine grade wet n dry, flip strop over rub in light oil to the oiltan hide strip and alternate flick knife edges up and down to remove ragged burrs from the tapered cutting edge. After about a month of practising I get the same result as using one of those 4 bladed monstrosities in the same amount of time. If you really want to save money & actually enjoy a shave this is the way to go. --- You just cannot sharpen disposable blades. As Mango said, you can remove burrs to make the edge smoother so the blade doesn't tug at the hair but it isn't going to cut the hair, it will just pass right over it because there is no edge to cut it. If you want to waste your time doing this you may as well also waste some time on trying to straighten out the bristles on your old toothbrush, too. Sir Topham Hatt
I tried the denim thing. Didn't work for me. Pushing the razor up your arm = sharpens it? No. It probably cleans the razor at best. I mean, would you use your arm to sharpen a knife? I switched to old fashioned safety razor, spend about £100 on blades, which I've worked out will last me around 50 years - and that's using them liberally! More interestingly, in the UK, Gillette have been advertising larger packs of blades at a "cheaper" price. I wonder if this is because beards have become fashionable again and many who do shave are looking at alternatives... +Mirumir Subscriber¹ Posted June 2, 2017 Subscriber¹ Share Posted June 2, 2017 Had been using the Gillettes for many years before I switched to an electric shaver (a Philips) several years ago. I swap new blades every two to three years. The device itself is unkillable, although after about 10 years of usage, the battery life has degraded a bit. There's no hassle with a foam or gel and the end result is a much better and cleaner shave which your girl will appreciate much more. I find that an electric shaver irritates the skin to a much lesser degree as well. Steven P. Administrators Posted June 2, 2017 Administrators Share Posted June 2, 2017 The best advice I can give is to simply dry off the blades after use, that extends off the shelf blades for quite a bit longer. It is water that blunts them, especially when left wet after use Just press the head on a towel to remove excess water > done. On 6/1/2017 at 3:26 AM, compl3x said: ...
