2 HDD how do you use it?

Hello,

 

Here is the configuration on my primary desktop computer:

1 × 480GB M.2 2280 SSD - C:\ - Operating system and applications

1 × BD-RE - D:\ - Blu-ray drive

1 × 6TB 3.5" HDD - E:\ - Data; F:\ - Downloads; V:\ - Virtual Machines

1 × 1TB 2.5" SATA SSD - G:\ - Games

2 × 5TB 2.5" HDD (USB 3.0) - backups of E:\, F:\, and V:\ (frequent rotation)

1 × 4TB 2.5" HDD (USB 3.0 - backup of E:\ and V:\ (infrequent rotation)

4 × 2TB 2.5" SSHD - Z:\ (experimenting with RAID, currently configured as 8TB RAID0).

The last item is new and something I'm just playing with to get an idea of how different RAID levels and stripe sizes perform for my use.

My system no longer has multiple hard disks, but when I did use this method I would always have my OS, games and programs on the main C drive; then allocate the extra drive for downloads, large files, game backups, etc. Now I just have a system drive and use a NAS for the extra stuff.

I've always preferred Handbreak to rip my DVD/Bluerays to MKV (mp4 is an option as well)

paired with DVD Fab which offers their disc decrypter for free now, it's a win-win for dvd/blueray ripping

2 SSD on raid 0, was cheaper to buy a 2nd one than a new larger one. So 2x 480GB for Windows, softwares, games 1 VM and database.

2 HDD 2TB on raid 1 for profile folders (Desktop, Documents, Music and Pictures)

1 HDD 4TB for Movies folder. This one is used for Video producing and all video medias and cache.

 

SSD for progs and hdd for storage.

10 years ago, storage needed more planning since drives were smaller and more expensive. And long ago it might have been the only interesting thing on the internet!

 

Someday some government body should give an Oscar type medal to the porn industry for covering the cost of early internet infrastructure and build out. I think it reached 50% of internet traffic at one point? Then came spam as the bandwidth king but they were just leaching. And now it's Netflix. About 60% I recall reading.

 

So if you follow that possibly incorrect and definitely twisted logic, the answer to why nobody mentioned porn is Netflix!

D:\ 500GB SSD --> Games, if I have to re-install the PC, I don't need to re-download all those GB of games from Steam and other stores

E:\ 6TB HDD --> Personal data like documents, pictures, scans, etc...

F:\ 6TB HDD --> clone of E:\, regular backups run from E:\ to F:\

I really wish Microsoft would introduce something similar to LVM on linux. I love having the ability to have X number of drives all in one volume and create one huge filesystem if I wanted or make them any size you want.

It's doing the job of combining serveral physical hdd in one "virtual" disk

I have 2 ssd's in raid and 3 platters for storage. One I use for games and install all apps like steam to it, best thing for them if you ever have to reinstall the os.. One is for movies, tv and music and the other for files. I set up one drive on it as well as point downloads, docs and the like to that drive. It frees up my raid for things like photoshop and other programs i want to have faster access to.

I plan on upgrading to all 3 t drives at some point. I still have plenty of room left so I'm in no big hurry.

@ZeGlouminouinteresting! I cannot tell you how many times I have looked for something like that. But yes, I see they say "If a simple volume is not a system volume or boot volume..." I would like it to be able to be the system volume as well but it's a start!

 

For example. /boot on my linux system cannot be a part of a LVM but everything else can. I have three total disks, one shared volume group, and two logical volumes.

just to throw in my 7 disks.... ;-P

SSD disk 1: OS + regular applications
HD disk 2: all user related data and profiles. As this has been moved from the C drive, this makes it easier to wipe the OS drive completely. Plus the swapfile, and a small set of portable applications.
SSD disk 3+4: dedicated TEMP volume for various apps. All temporary folders for these apps are moved here. Spanned SSD's for faster access to the temporary work files. Also temp drive for downloads and such.
HD disk 5: video file. This due to the huge files and limited capacity on the server.
HD disk 6: backup disk for server and some local data
HD disk 7: second (off site) backup disk.

And the server is a 4 HD disk RAID 10, 6TB setup where the 'regular' project data is stored.

Works for me ;-)

And @Everlive89: Like many said this is possible. Have look at the disk manager as well for dynamic disks and spanned volumes. It's all there, but not much known.
