Ok having a strange issue

so i have main router with internet coming into the house, i have another router connected via cable to it that i am using as a wifi access point

when i am connected to the 2nd wifi i cant seem to access the devices connected to the main router

so looks like this

192.168.0.1 (Main router, does DHCP)

192.168.0.2 (Second router connected via ethernet to Main Router, DHCP Turned off

192.168.0.3 Gigabit Switch connected to main router

192.168.0.4 PLex Media center connected to switch

So if i am on the second router wifi and try to access PLex for example it appears as it does not exist. If i connect to the main router wifi it works fine

All hosts on 192.168.0.0/24

Also does anyone have a good dedicated wifi access point i could switch the second router for instead that provide wifi ac thats not gonna break the bank :) i have no use for vlan or anythin like that so just a basic one

Can't help you with your problem, I'm useless with networking but am doing my best to learn :p

But on the AP, a few people on here and most of the people I know highly recommend the UniFi stuff. Not sure what breaking the bank for you is....

Are you using the Internet/WAN port on the 2nd router or another port?

You might use this for a guide, as well:

https://www.labnol.org/software/add-router-to-wireless-network/19716/

And did you change from gateway to router?

You must plug into the lan port on router 2 to a lan port on router 1.  Do not plug anything into the wan/internet port this will mess things up.  Any subsequent routers that you add onto the network behind router 1, put a piece of tape over the wan/internet port so that you aren't tempted to use it.

Wow this sort of statement makes me just cringe with pain.. You have no use to isolate devices on your network?  You have any iot devices at all?

Nothing on my network that i need to split no. Only devices that connnect to it are all trusted.

So on my network i have smart tvs. Mobile phone. Laptops. Server and one cctv camera.

What would you segregate on that and why?

Smart tvs - so you have no idea what could get infected with those.. IP cameras?  You do understand there is like 1200 models of those that are open to back doors and such, have no freaking idea about their code, etc.  Why would you not isolate those away from your laptops and servers?

As for suggestion, go with the Ubiquiti, those AP's are rock solid and must have inho.

I bought two used ones 2011ish and they worked perfectly well until last month one of them died so I had to upgrade and now I have two Unifi AC-Pro.

The IP Camera is locked down, Not accessible to the outside, has no traffic in or out form the outside world.

Where is the modem in your setup?

Its built into the router where the main line comes in :)

Cool, i was looking at these already but was not sure if they were as good as they seem.

They are a great bang for your buck.

@BudMan, this is how my network is just now, the lower switch is only one capable of VLAN

So on the switch if i had two VLANS, the server and Internet would need to be shared between them but i could have

VLAN1

Server, Smart TV, Smart TV, Sonos, Sonos, Sonos, Pi Hole, IP Camera

VLAN2

Everything else including server and internet

is it as simple as that?

Basic Drawing below

So the 24 port switch can do vlans?

If you can put whatever you want on whatever vlans you want 2, 10, 20 as many really as you would need.  the only limitation is if that 8 port switch is dumb.  Then anything connected to that switch would be on the same vlan.

Your wifi doesn't do vlans (does it) so your limited to all your wifi being on 1 vlan..  What exactly are you using for your current modem/router there?  does it even support vlans?  If your router does not support vlans - doesn't matter what your switch can do, unless its L3 (router) and then you could isolate everything there and just use a transit to your internet router.

But then you would be limited to the ACL controls it has, etc.

once you change that then yeah your good.. if the 8 porter can not do vlans then all devices connected too it will just be on the vlan you assign the port its uplinked too on the 24 port vlan switch
