EchoDNS
Hello guys. For the past year I've been having a major issue regarding my DNS (I'd assume). What happens is that I use the internet every day and out of nowhere my internet connection stops. Kind off atleast. All my current connections will keep on working. Let's say if I was browsing youtube, my youtube connection will stay stable. But I won't be able to connect to any other websites or games. It says that it can't find the DNS server of the website I'm looking for. For almost 10 months straight what I've done to fix it was uninstall my ethernet driver (Killer E2200 Gigabit Ethernet controller) and reinstall it. This always made sure that the problem wouldn't occur for another day. Sadly this solution doesn't work anymore. I used an Ethernet powerplug made by sitecom at the time. What I've done to fix this was buy another powerplug by sitecom since I had assumed that the powerplug was broken. This sort of fixed the problem for a very short period of time. The dns server crashed again. But it was again solvable by reinstalling the ethernet drivers. After 3 months it crashed again and by then I had figured out it wasn't just because of the powerplug. So what I've done was make my own Ethernet UTP cable. The internet speed is a huge amount faster than what I previously had but sadly sometimes I still randomly disconnect from the internet and my computer will say that it can't find my Ethernet cable. In my browser it'll either say that I don't have internet connection or the same message as before that it can't find the DNS of the website. I've wasted around 200 euro's on powerplugs and another 40 euro's on making my own cable. Could it be that my own ethernet cable is poorly made? this would confuse me because I've made it 3 days ago and whenever it works it's incredibly fast. Or could there a different issue? I would love to have some advice <3 Link to comment https://www.neowin.net/forum/topic/1342898-dns-problem-no-internet/ Share on other sites
+BudMan MVC Posted September 21, 2017 MVC Share Posted September 21, 2017 Why would you think its your cable or your nic - if your saying youtube still plays etc.. What are you using for dns? Your router, google, open? That is most likely where you problem is.. from a cmd line do nslookup.. What does it show you for your dns? When you have sight that has issues again, do a simple nslookup for it. What is it saying is your server, what answer do you get back? goretsky Supervisor Posted September 23, 2017 Supervisor Share Posted September 23, 2017 Hello, Have you checked with your anti-malware software vendor for any known compatibility issues with Killer E2200 network adapters? +BudMan MVC Posted September 23, 2017 MVC Share Posted September 23, 2017 well clearly your not going to be able to look up anything if your dns does not answer which is from your nslookup test.. But your pointing to a remote dns server, why are you not just pointing at your routers IP and let it forward to multiple dns be it your ISP or google or open or any of the other public dns? So can not tell if the problem is the dns, or if just your internet in general.. When you have the issue again trying to just ping something on the internet by IP.. 8.8.8.8 or 8.8.4.4 normally answer ping example > ping 8.8.8.8 Pinging 8.8.8.8 with 32 bytes of data: Reply from 8.8.8.8: bytes=32 time=11ms TTL=57 Reply from 8.8.8.8: bytes=32 time=13ms TTL=57 Reply from 8.8.8.8: bytes=32 time=14ms TTL=57 Reply from 8.8.8.8: bytes=32 time=12ms TTL=57 Ping statistics for 8.8.8.8: Packets: Sent = 4, Received = 4, Lost = 0 (0% loss), Approximate round trip times in milli-seconds: Minimum = 11ms, Maximum = 14ms, Average = 12ms If that fails do a tracert - does it fail first hop after your router or does it fail later on.. Or if it works then points to just problem with your dns your using. BTW you have a really short lease time Lease Obtained. . . . . . . . . . : zaterdag 23 september 2017 00:40:57 Lease Expires . . . . . . . . . . : zaterdag 23 september 2017 01:42:57 There is rarely a reason to run such short lease times unless you have so many clients that enter and leave the network that your scope is over subscribed and need to clear out unused leases.. As example here is lease time of mine Lease Obtained. . . . . . . . . . : Sunday, September 17, 2017 5:38:26 AM Lease Expires . . . . . . . . . . : Monday, September 25, 2017 5:12:09 AM Link to comment https://www.neowin.net/forum/topic/1342898-dns-problem-no-internet/#findComment-598037336 Share on other sites

+John Teacake MVC Posted September 23, 2017 MVC Share Posted September 23, 2017 Definitely try different DNS servers. EchoDNS
I've just experienced the problem again and have followed the advice all of you guys have given me. Keep in mind. At the time my internet crashed by 50% again. I was still able to browse youtube and play the game I was playing before since I hadn't closed the connection with them during running these tests. First I started off by pinging 8.8.8.8 . In the first picture it's visible that I've gotten 0 responses. After that I'd tried to tracert a few websites but it gave me no responses either. Around 2 minutes later I decided to ping 8.8.8.8 . Again and this time it did show a result. (Websites like google still did not load for me however!) Also I had ran a tracert 8.8.8.8 and the results can be seen in the 3rd picture. I don't really know what this means but it seems like 2 of the requests timed out for some reason. What should I do to fix this reoccuring problem? Link to comment https://www.neowin.net/forum/topic/1342898-dns-problem-no-internet/#findComment-598038430 Share on other sites
+BudMan MVC Posted September 25, 2017 MVC Share Posted September 25, 2017 well your traceroutes to names not going to work if you can not resolve - you need to do the traceroute to IP. But your ping shows a problem that you get a general failure? This points to something wrong on the machine, something stopping the ping from going out like some sort of security/antivirus software. Try pinging your actual gateway your 192.168.178.1 (your router) when you have the problem. Be in general not able to ping 8.8.8.8 other than general failure points to your connection being down, either past your router or your connection to your router. You saying stuff is still working when you have this problems points to something on your machine or your router not creating new states, etc.. other than a general internet failure on your isp side.. xendrome
Yeah you have a problem with your system, NIC, router or internet modem. Do you have another system you can ping from or use the internet on while this happens on the first system, so we can see where the issue actually resides? EchoDNS
I will ping 192.168.178.1 next time the problem occurs. But I think it might be a problem with just my computer since it only happens to me!
