I am pretty sure of NordVPN. Just sounds the best out of the group.

The question I have:

Say I have a server, separate computer, and I use it to host a MineCraft server. So, on my router, I set it to port forward that computer's IP. And that's how my worldwide friends cannect to it.

Would a VPN distrupt this connection? If I set the OpenVPN on my router?

So a person connects to x.x.x.x:25565, will he be able to see that if it is under a VPN?

I tried explaining this the best I can. Any questions, ask.

Edit: I asked two friends who work with servers, and they aren't 100% sure. Oh, BudMan.... :D

I am not sure why you would set it up that way, if you are hosting a server. Why not just run the VPN Client or OpenVPN client on the device you want on the VPN and leave everything else off of it? I dont see why you would want your server on the VPN. @BudMan can comment on the minecraft part, but I am pretty sure if you run your VPN on the minecraft server, you will provide them with a different IP. You would probably want to create a VM on the server and have the game hosted through that, virtualization would be your friend in this case, unless you are given a fixed IP by the VPN. Hopefully Budman can clarify or confirm.

I never said I wanted VPN on the server. I said I wanted toi put VPN on the router. As all the devices in this house will be safe from prying eyes.

Also, I never said you wanted the  VPN on your server, not sure why you read in-between everything I say to you. All I said was, if you run the server on the VPN (so if you put the VPN on your router the server falls under that umbrella). Anyways, why would you want your server to be "safe from prying eyes?" Do you mean hackers sniffer the internet, or the government? That doesn't make a ton of sense to be honest. My earlier response is still valid, if you want to VPN everything you will either need a fixed IP from the VPN or run a VM on the server.

If you are referring to my wording of

Quote

but I am pretty sure if you run your VPN on the minecraft server,

OK fine, but is that really all you pulled from my response? Come on now. What I meant was if you included the server as part of your VPN, not running the VPN client on it.

I want to put VPN coverage on the router, you get that into your head? all of my 10 computers, tablets, laptops. and phones connect to the router.

If I put VPN on EVERY computer... Will take awhile, and I'm sure my mom doesn't know how to turn it on and off.

I can put it on my router, be done with it. Save a lot of headaches.

Why are you always so childish? What is there to get into my head? I already said I understood what you want to accomplish and gave you the know-how. Why are you so bent out of shape?

It happens when you answer any of my questions...

It "sounds" like you are saying to not put VPN on the server. It won't be. With it being on the router, isn't it everything that goes out of the router, goes into the VPN? Or am I thinking this @$$ backwards?

It seems you have some sort of previous issue with something I have said, and carry that into any thread I respond to. Telling someone to "open their eyes," or "is that in your head" doesn't help you cause.

You aren't understanding anything I am saying, so I will rewrite this one more time for you.

I think it is pointless to put the VPN on 24/7 on your router. My suggestion was to use the VPN on your computer. You mention your mom and all other devices, what would be the point of that? To keep them safe from prying eye as you say, do you really think your mom will need that? It could cause more issues. Are you trying to stop the government, or weekend hackers and script kiddies? What do you think they are looking for? None of my business, but I know @Budman has echoed this before.

For your scenario, putting the VPN on your router will require you to either have a fixed IP from the VPN provider or the better option is run a VM on the server to host your minecraft. You ip will be "masked" when using a VPN, so that old address will not work.

I am going to step away for a bit in hopes that this makes sense to you and we dont start another back and forth.

I have echo'd before I don't see much point to a vpn for a home user other than to circumvent geo restrictions, or hide something from their ISP..  Unless your in some country where they prevent your access to the world, filter your traffic, etc.  They don't really help the home user in the sense that they are using them for "privacy"..  Safe from prying eye's seems to scream I have jumped on the vpn bandwagon because I don't know any better and I have money in my pocket I want to give to some company so my internet will be slower ;)

But to answer the question.. How do I allow someone from public internet through my vpn connection into server on my network.

Step 1 - does this vpn service you are using support port forwarding?

https://support.nordvpn.com/hc/en-us/articles/208084025-Do-you-offer-port-forwarding-

Guess there is no point to move to Step 2 since this vpn service does not support port forwarding... So there is NO way for device on the public internet to hit your vpn IP with unsolicited traffic and be forwarded down the tunnel to your server.

So you have couple of options.  You could use a vpn service that supports port forwarding, or you could just host your game server off your actual ISP IP via just your typical port forward on you router..

Step 2 if your vpn support port forwarding would be to setup the port forward on your VPN service using whatever port they will give you. It rarely going to be the port you want, its just going to be some random high port X that you can say forward down the tunnel to port Y.. Then on your tunnel connection on your router you would allow this port Y into your server.

You would then tell your game buddies to connect to the VPN IP on port X to access your game.  And then play your game with added latency ;)  Most games users want to serve don't really care about slower connections do they?  So adding some ms to my RTT not a big deal in gaming is it.. ROFL

Billy why is RTT in game 60ms when you live 2 streets over and we are on the same ISP?  Oh because of my shinyhat I want to be safe from all the prying eyes so your hitting my VPN IP 1000 miles away.. Don't worry the extra few MS won't matter in this FPS game ;)
