patseguin Global Moderator Posted November 17, 2017 Global Moderator Share Posted November 17, 2017 I bought the Xbox one X when it came out and have the original Xbox one that came with Kinect. It's just going to sit in my basement and gather dust. Any suggestions what to do with it? I have no friends who want it and I'm not sure if it's worth it to try and sell on Craig's list. Anyone know a charity or some other group that would put it to good use? Anyone know a charity or some other group that would put it to good use? The Kinect is extremely useful so you might want to keep that, if you have any geek type hobby interests. It can hook up to the PC and be used for vision and robotics projects. Can be used as a 3D scanner of sorts and for green screen body position detection (i.e. low cost character input for indie games etc) and so on... If you are really located in Buffalo, NY then maybe we could all pitch in with some internet searching. One thing that comes to mind is that just about every major hospital has a long term care facility for terminal patients and since they essentially live there, most are equipped with a community area with a TV that might very well benefit from your XBox. Being a hospital, the Xbox is unlikely to be abused and make a waste of your charity. There are also organizations that distribute Christmas gifts for children but I'm not sure if you can find one that will accept a non-shrinkwrapped used product. And if you can't locate a suitable charity, I have a young boy here who is getting a Nintendo Switch but he could be surprised to know he has an Uncle Pat who wants him to know there is more to life than an Italian Plumber when it comes to gaming! sc302 Veteran Posted November 18, 2017 Veteran Share Posted November 18, 2017 The Kinect is so useful to me I have never hooked it up. There must be millions that never connected it - if only I could dream up a way to make it easy for people to ship them to me! Or create a way for people to donate the Kinects to a local University, College or perhaps a high school with a tech program. PGHammer
Sell it clean (no games), but WITH the accessories (either eBay or CraigsList). Depending on what you want for it, I may want it (no joke that; I don't have a console). Quite honestly, I'd actuallly USE the Kinect (as a Skype module). PM me with what you would consider a decent offer. DevTech
OK, I looked at charities in the Buffalo area and as might be expected, they all want new unopened gifts as donations. Of course we all know that a working XBox One would be totally appreciated by anyone who understood what it was. I found two that looked like it they might work with you: https://www.wnycatholic.org/news/article/featured/2015/12/18/101242/ladies-of-charity-provide-toys-gifts-for-needy-children-and-teens https://www.buffalocitymission.org/current-and-urgent-needs/ And on this page there is a long list of phone numbers: http://www.needhelppayingbills.com/html/erie_county_free_christmas_ass.html I haven't looked at hospitals yet... Some child in Buffalo's less advantaged areas, or some sick hospital patient could be very happy this Christmas because of him.
