Remote
That is legal....the play is dead if the ball is hit over the fence, but if the play is live the runner is called out. Any contact between coach and runner results in an out. That is correct. As long as all runners legally touch the bases while advancing to home, they can touch anybody they wish. The batter or any of the runners could be carried around the bases on the shoulders of his teammates as long as he comes down and touches each base as he reaches it. Joel
Any contact between coach and runner results in an out. Actually, any assistance given is illegal (if the ball is live), a slap to the bum is not considered assistance or rule-breaking. deceased_which_appreciates
Out. That's just like standing on the base. However, if you are tagging the runner instead of the base, you must touch the runner with the hand that has the ball. Joel
Same play, but the ball ends up in the jersey of the third baseman. While holding the lump under his jersey, he tags the base. What's the call? Link to comment https://www.neowin.net/forum/topic/135915-are-you-umpire-material/page/4/#findComment-1665661 Share on other sites
Remote
The umpires arrive at the ballpark one hour before game time and declare the game "called" due to wet grounds. Is this correct? Yea, my response was referring to Little League (called Dixie Youth here). Ive seen a runner take a wide turn at 3rd and run over the coach and get called out. That's definitely not assistance, but I think you answer is right too. Joel
The umpires arrive at the ballpark one hour before game time and declare the game "called" due to wet grounds. Is this correct? No, only the manager of the home team may make that decision, except for the second game of a double-header. Now answer mine. :p Link to comment https://www.neowin.net/forum/topic/135915-are-you-umpire-material/page/4/#findComment-1665678 Share on other sites

What's the call? The runner is safe unless the umpire believes that full possesion of the ball was made as the fielder tagged the base. Joel
Correct. While at bat, a ball pitched to a batter touches the batting glove hanging out of his back pocket. Is this a hit batsman? Remote
Correct. While at bat, a ball pitched to a batter touches the batting glove hanging out of his back pocket. Is this a hit batsman? Good one. I would have to say no because it is not part of the uniform. Joel
It is considered part of the uniform and the batter would be awarded the base as a hit batter. Remote
No outs, bases loaded. The 1st baseman catches a foul fly and falls into the stands. Remote
Ball is dead, they can't move. You are 50% correct. Explanation is in Rule 7.04© is very clear and simple in that the ball is dead, but each runner is awarded one base in this situation. Chris Allen Veteran Posted January 29, 2004 Veteran Share Posted January 29, 2004 I umpired baseball for 3 years and some of these I have actually come across on the field. Great idea for a thread just to see what people 'think' they know (Y) That said, some of those I couldn't answer myself, like the 'refusal to enter the batters box' Never even heard of that. Great find. Link to comment https://www.neowin.net/forum/topic/135915-are-you-umpire-material/page/4/#findComment-1665833 Share on other sites
Joel
That said, some of those I couldn't answer myself, like the 'refusal to enter the batters box' Never even heard of that. Great find. I love that, I got to use it once and boy, did he get back in the box in a hurry. :D edit: the Official wording If the batter refuses to take his position in the batter's box during his time at bat, the umpire shall order the pitcher to pitch, and shall call "Strike" on each such pitch. The batter may take his proper position after any such pitch, and the regular ball and strike count shall continue, but if he does not take his proper position before three strikes are called, he shall be declared out. Remote
Kind of similar to silly_walks ? Nobody on base and 1 out, with an 0-2 count the batter refuses to take his position in the batter's box. You order the pitcher to "Pitch the ball". The pitcher bounces one that gets past the catcher and the batter runs to 1st safely. Is he entitled to stay at 1st base? Remote
I'll say no. The pitch was automatically a strike as per rule 6.02© and since it was a third strike and the catcher did not catch the ball, the batter could legally run to 1st base as per rule 6.09(b). Joel
Can you quote me an example of that, please? It's a little bizarre. The guy's not in the box, but he can run to first.
