Google has published its latest breakdown of platform usage, showing the proportion of active devices running each version of the Android OS. The data was collected during a 7-day period that ended on Aug 31, and it only represents devices that have visited the Google Play Store during that period, so to be clear, it does not include AOSP devices.
Google used to publish these reports monthly, but this report comes six weeks after the last one which was published on July 23.
Version | Codename | API | July | This month | Change |
---|---|---|---|---|---|
2.3.3 - 2.3.7 | Gingerbread | 10 | 0.2% | 0.3% | 0.1 |
4.0.3 - 4.0.4 | Ice Cream Sandwich | 15 | 0.3% | 0.3% | - |
4.1.x | Jelly Bean | 16 | 1.2% | 1.2% | - |
4.2.x | 17 | 1.9% | 1.8% | -0.1 | |
4.3.x | 18 | 0.5% | 0.5% | - | |
4.4 | KitKat | 19 | 9.1% | 8.6% | -0.5 |
5.0 | Lollipop | 21 | 4.2% | 3.8% | -0.4 |
5.1 | 22 | 16.2% | 15.4% | -0.8 | |
6.0 | Marshmallow | 23 | 23.5% | 22.7% | -0.8 |
7.0 | Nougat | 24 | 21.2% | 20.3% | -0.9 |
7.1 | 25 | 9.6% | 10.5% | 0.9 | |
8.0 | Oreo | 26 | 10.1% | 11.4% | 1.3 |
8.1 | 27 | 2.0% | 3.2% | 1.2 |
Once again, and as is to be expected, the biggest gains come from Android Oreo, or more specifically, Android 8.0 Oreo. Even after over nine months on the market, Android O still falls below a combined 15% of all devices measured.
Android 7.0 Nougat continues to decline; although 7.1 still managed to register a modest 0.9% rise, which is exactly the amount 7.0 lost in the last six weeks. Marshmallow dropped by 0.8%, which, again is quite modest.
Other older versions like Gingerbread, Ice Cream Sandwich, and Jelly Bean remain largely stagnant, although oddly enough Gingerbread did register a 0.1% increase in usage. Lollipop continues its decline, now falling to below a combined 20% with the 1.2% drop compared to July's stats.
Android 9.0 Pie doesn't even register on the list, because it's still far too new and falls under the 0.1% required for measurement despite being available to Pixel devices for almost a month.
