sc302 Veteran Posted November 28, 2018 Veteran Share Posted November 28, 2018 All upscaling really can do is smooth out pixelation to save you from seeing jagged pixel edges. At best it is 480 p. You aren’t getting 4K detail on that. 1080 smoothing can happen. Even 4K. But details aren’t going to be there you may also lose sharpness. He he could use andvd hd to pull the decoded file structure off the disk. That is as raw as you can get. At that point handbrake can be used to put it in whatever format at whatever quality. DevTech
With everything that has been suggested so far, I can currently think of only 2 solutions that wouldn't have me wanting to tear my eyeballs out while watching a DVD 1. Buy a PRO QUALITY BluRay box with a licensed DVD upscale chip. - uses a Sony chip: Sony UBPX1000ES 4K Ultra HD Blu-Ray Disc Player - https://www.amazon.com/Sony-UBPX1000ES-Ultra-Blu-Ray-Player/dp/B06ZZMQVZD/ref=sr_1_4?ie=UTF8&qid=1543365390&sr=8-4&keywords=sony+x1000 - it's an Oppo: Oppo UDP-203 Region Free Ultra HD Audiophile Blu-ray Disc Player Can Play Any DVD Region from 0123456789 or Any Blu Ray Zone from A,B,C on Any TV. https://www.amazon.com/UDP-203-Region-Audiophile-Blu-ray-0123456789/dp/B01N24GN8B/ - uses Dolby Vision chip: LG 970 UHD - Dual HDMI - 2D/3D - Wi-Fi - 2K/4K - Region Free Blu Ray Disc DVD Player https://www.amazon.com/LG-970-UHD-100-240V-World-Wide/dp/B075VBXLLC/ 2. Buy a PRO QUALITY TV with a licensed DVD upscale chip. I gave up on examining TVs, here is an example of a "pro sumer" type of tv: - Sony XBR-65Z9F 65" 4K Ultra HD Smart BRAVIA LED TV (2018) - https://www.amazon.com/Sony-XBR-65Z9F-BRAVIA-Speaker-Assistant/dp/B07K77Z4JX/ And keep his 500 DVD binder next to those devices. 1.B) BONUS FIND: (I think this has a good upscale chip but I can't confirm it, but it holds 400 Discs! but no 4K) - Sony BDP-CX7000ES 400 Blu-ray Disc Mega Changer (Black) (2009 Model) - https://www.amazon.com/Sony-BDP-CX7000ES-Blu-ray-Changer-Black/dp/B002JIMRFC/ 3. If someone can locate PRO QUALITY DVD upscale software then other options open up... You haven't been looking at the material I have been posting! Yes, there is smoothing (soften filter) but there is a TON of other processing that can be applied with really complex algorithms. During that transitional time period when HD TVs cmae out everywhere but none of the cable channels and TV networkds had any HD content, a TON of research happened to upscale SD video to HD and TV networks installed and operated this equipment to cover the "gap" period. From all that professional equipment, some of it ended up in high end BluRay Players and high end TVs But almost none of it appears to have leaked into available software and of course there is no motivation any more for this to happen... sc302 Veteran Posted November 28, 2018 Veteran Share Posted November 28, 2018 I don’t think all of that is needed. That is getting into the realm of wtf. I think PLEX will be fine once he gets a good copy and can play it. I wish my kid didn’t give away my Blu-ray drive. I am intrigued in seeing a difference between dvd and bluray on PLEX within the same content. I have plenty of movies that are dvd quality and some that are Blu-ray...I enjoy them both the same on my 55”, 43”, 22”, 9”, and 5” screens. I have a 135” screen too but the projectors I have seen to have a screen door effect...hardly noticeable at 30+ feet away. In general the OP has not been getting enough respect form all of us since in fact he has a really tricky problem by not moving on to HD content like everyone else There is NO POSSIBLE WAY that PLEX has professional quality DVD upscaling out of the box, but maybe somewhere there is a plug-in for it, but good chance it would cost money to cover patent licenses (like Dolby Vision etc) You are 100% correct that real world testing is desperately needed for anyone who is curious about this and possibly some of the findings might apply to HD to 4K upscaling but I think that has a different set of tech issues and is actually a lot easier To test, we need your old Bluray Player, one of the high end players I listed, a Sony PS4, standard PLEX, and the Mythical Unicorn Software that I haven't located yet... Anyone have all of these? Link to comment https://www.neowin.net/forum/topic/1376023-backing-up-dvd-blu-ray-cd-collection/page/9/#findComment-598391655 Share on other sites

Also, from a PLEX point of view, if you make exact copies of the DVD and then stream MPEG VOB files, a good enough TV or "Roku type device with licensed upscale chip in it" (if such a thing exists) should be able to detect the input as a "DVD" and invoke it's internal sophisticated DVD upscale that just does not seem to exist in the PC software world... DevTech
IDEA: With a giant hard drive, lots of computer power and patience to get the settings just right it should be possible to upscale the DVD at time of RIP, apply a giant crapload of Video Post Processing and then encode the result as a "Pseudo BluRay" in x265 This bypasses the need for all that processing real-time on the play back device or the streaming device, BOTH of which after all of this many page thread we have FAILED to identify any PRO DVD upscale path. People, stop complaining about the length of the thread. All of the quick and easy Band-Aid solutions just don't work when 100% of your source material is 500+ SD 24 fps interlaced jittery crap video you want to watch on HD or 4K without needing medical attention for your eyes! So we need to level-up our empathy circuits and imagine a kickass SD to FHD/4K best tech possible in 2018 and that turns out to be Deliciously Difficult if you want to nail it! What about the part where he said he did that and it looked like crap compared to his PS4? That's what got me wondering what sort of "secret sauce" the PS4 was using... and then discovering just how crazy the old DVD format actually was... Sony has a ton of their own proprietary upscaling technology which I suspect they added to the PS4 as another selling point... Even if he vanished and never came back which as we all know happens from time to time, it's still a bit interesting to wonder what is available in 2018 to make DVDs upscale any amount better than "out of the box" viewers/players... Technique
This upscaling - just a curiosity thing here so don't shoot me but is it more for me or yourself? Since i already said if upscaling involves a ton of work then i'm gone. Anyway, just a quick update, and don't worry Budman you'll get updated when i've taken the 15 minutes. Check back at the weekend is probably your best bet. I contacted Plex through twitter to ask about support for my TV. They were pretty vague. So then i went on that market thing this morning on my TV. Nice to see how Panasonic know their own products... Friday/Saturday i'll take a look at hooking it up. So, i know you're going to crucify me anyway but.... Stick the ripped movie on a USB stick and plug the USB stick in to my PC (leave PC turned on) Fire up Plex on the TV, sign in and somehow point it at my USB stick. I assume it'll be easy enough to locate the USB stick, although how i don't know. Then let Plex do its thing. Something like that ^^? sc302 Veteran Posted November 28, 2018 Veteran Share Posted November 28, 2018 Install PLEX server. Walk through the wizard (this is where you can point to whatever storage you have, file share, usb, local folder, whatever) and then it does it’s thing to identify, put the box art/description/metadata on it (PLEX magic). When that is done, you can play it on your computer through your browser or stream to any device on your network. To stream off your network, you need plex pass. It is a very simple install process. Just take 5 seconds to glance at the options before committing to “next”. If my technologically inclined boss could do it without help, you have a good chance of not messing it up. If it takes you more than 5 min to download and setup there is something wrong.
