So EA and Respawn have jumped on the Battle Royale bandwagon and have released Apex Legends. It's available now for free on PC, PS4 and Xbox.

A World where Anything Goes

The Frontier War is over. After hundreds of years of conflict between the Interstellar Manufacturing Corporation and the Militia founded to fight them, the far-off region of space known as the Frontier can finally know peace.

But liberation can come at a cost: when the IMC and the Militia departed, they took everything of value and left the Frontier worlds in disarray. With no way to support themselves, the people of the Frontier had no choice but to leave their homes. The brave relocated to the Outlands.

A remote cluster of planets on the fringes of the Frontier, the Outlands are untouched by war and teeming with resources and opportunity. But life is cheap here, and danger lurks around every corner. Its pioneers, explorers, and outlaws used to spend their lives locked in an endless power struggle – now, they settle their differences in the Apex Games, a bloodsport where Legends from all corners of the Frontier compete for money, fame, and glory.

Strategic Battle Royale

If you’re going to survive the Apex Games, you have to think fast. Master your Legend’s abilities, make strategic calls on the fly, and use your team’s strengths to your advantage in vicious 60-player matches.

Innovative Combat

Experience the next evolution of battle royale with Respawn Beacons you can use to resurrect your teammates, Smart Comms to help you communicate, Intelligent Inventory so you can grab only what you need, and an all-new way to drop into the action with Jumpmaster deployment.

Regular Seasons

Compete every season to unlock new Legends, fresh weapons, themed loot, and more.

Each match consists of the initial drop, the ever shrinking battle area and up to 20 teams of three. Currently, there's no option to play solo so playing as a team is a must. Each squad consists of different types on characters, each with unique abilities like the ability to create grappling hooks, booby traps or a dome shield.

Unlike other games, there's no resource collecting or building. The map is much smaller than those of PUBG and Fortnite. Everything that unlocks via purchase is purely aesthetic.

Unfortunately, I was looking after an unwell 10 month old so missed the live stream and the chance to jump in and play, but I've set it to pre-download on my Xbox and looking forward to giving it a go. I loved playing both Titanfall games and hoping that this can capture some of the bits that made playing those two a joy.

Has anyone managed to give this a go yet?

I've not played it but I'm watching some streamers this morning and honestly, it looks very much like Blackout to me which isn't a good thing. It's also removed one of the better and more enjoyable parts of TitanFall, the Titans.

I'm not really interested in this, I doubt I'll try it even though it is free.

When I first saw this thread I thought, "urgh...another Battle Royale game?"

Then I saw the game trailer on Neowin's article and thought, "hmm...ok, it looks alright." But then again, that's what a trailer is supposed to do.

I'll probably set it up to download this evening, then go and watch some other people playing it for a bit before deciding if I want to play or not.

I love PUBG so BR's are on my radar but when I look at most of them that have been released, they just don't have the feel that PUBG gives me. This looks good, from the streamers I've watched they all say it plays really well but it just does nothing for me.

Peer pressure from my normal PUBG friends may lead me to play it since it's free but I'll go kicking and screaming if I do.

So I finally managed to give this a go yesterday. Unfortunately, it was only the tutorial and 1 match but I was impressed with how it played.

It was way more polished than PUBG on the Xbox but there's still a few niggles that I wasn't a fan of. The interface seems to focused on PC, which can make some of the menus a pain.

The game was fun though. The while pinging thing is genius, yet so simple. With games like this where you play in squads but may not want/need to have a headset, being able to still communicate with team members with a touch of a button is great. I tried a few of the difference weapons and they felt good. The map was big and seemed to have a lot of variation in environment which could lead to some great fire fights.

I hope that I can pour some more time into this game, it seems like it'll do well. I hope they decide to introduce some of the Titanfall elements into the game, navigating around a map with your pilot in TF was great and fun so elements like wall running and double jumping would be great to so.

I did read last night that there's no commitment from Respawn to release more maps or changes to the game. Hopefully they'll see how successful it is and change their minds.

From the sounds of things they would be stupid to drop it at this stage.

Care to elaborate? So you press a button and it says, "ding!" to your teammates? And then I guess you would have your own form of morse code for more complex communication?

I don't like the sound of wall running and double-jumping though...I've played Black Ops 3's multiplayer for about an hour and their "jet packs" or whatever it is that everyone has is infuriating, although perhaps they've just been poorly implemented.

As I said in the article just now, I still haven't got round to downloading it. But I'll give it a go at some point.

I guess it was their get out clause if anything went horribly wrong. Kinda let's release this and pretend we don't care until it gets big 😛

Pretty much, but it's a ping ;) You can point it at items and it broadcasts the location, via a waypoint, and there's also a generic voiceover like "hey, there's a gun over here' or "I think we should go there" As I said pretty much eliminates the need for a headset and actual interaction for a game like this. Whilst there is some tactics and team play, it's not in depth enough to warrant anything more than those sort of commands.

It was fun in Titanfall. I guess it was something that was needed with the Titans in play. As I said, I only played one match, but I enjoyed it. Definitely give it a go!

From the trailer and little I’d read about the game online Apex Legends did appear pretty fun, however the majority of the game I played was spent doing nothing.

Myself and my two team mates landed, then must have run about for almost 10 minutes before actually finding anyone else on a different team. I got killed covering a team mate, a few minutes later after walking about a lot more my team got to a point and managed to revive me, then about 30 seconds later we all got killed and that was that.

I expected the game would be a lot more action packed and a lot less running about not doing much.

It could just have been a bad game in all fairness, however in all honesty I never enjoyed Fortnite, so I’m probably not the target audience for this game. I think at this point I’ve concluded Battle Royal games are probably not my cuppa tea.

I did however play the Crackdown 3 Wrecking Zone Tech Test on Sunday which was so much fun, if I put in a game in the near future I know what it’s going to be.

That quiet period the the start of matches is an 'issue' with all BR games, even with the number of players the sheer size of the map makes it difficult to see any action. When the area does start to shrink, it can become more intense, but unless you make it that far it's difficult to be fun. I see that :)

If the level was half the size I could see the game been a lot more intense much sooner in to the game, especially as you can go to certain areas to revive people, so you might have some idea of where battles would congregate. That’s probably more what I was expecting based on the limited footage I’d seen of the game.

It is impressive how well the game is doing though, it’s come out of nowhere and now has 2 million+ concurrent players.

Heh with Anthem and Crackdown 3 around the corner I haven't even hardly thought about it, though I love Respawns games.

That was another strange move by EA. To release two online shooters (yes they're different, but still online shoorters) in the same month.

Well, they're for different audiences at least.  One is PvP only and one is no PvP at all.

True, I thought that Anthem did have PvP.

Is it PvE only?

Yep.  Four player coop is a lot of the game, and no PvP.  Some people are bitching about it but I'd think a lot more support the decision when everything else has PvP (and historically Bioware has only done coop anyway.)

Yeah, personally I'd prefer PvE, but I'm not sure when I'd actually be able to play the game.

I managed a few hours of the alpha and liked the look of what I saw, despite the bugs.
