Windows is not responding

Recommended Posts

I just have rebooted my computer - it didn’t respond quick enough - and after rebooting my desktop was unresponsive.

The message I get is shown in the picture.

I haven’t updated something.

Also rebooting and signing out doesn’t work. Even a hard reset by holding down the power button is not successful.

Restarting does bring back my desktop, but I cannot do anything.

What can be the case here?

Is there anything showing under the event viewer or the task manager? Have you run an antivirus and malware scan?

I haven't ran AV or malware scan yet. I do have ESET Internet Security 14.0.22.0 installed w/ latest updates.

I have a couple of errors in Event Viewer:

"The WsDrvInst service failed to start due to the following error:
The system cannot find the file specified."

as well as

"The system has rebooted without cleanly shutting down first. This error could be caused if the system stopped responding, crashed, or lost power unexpectedly."

Such as (details below):

Sometimes, maybe try to see if WhoCrashed finds anything or says anything relevant. It's a free program that checks crash dumps: https://www.resplendence.com/whocrashed

HDD or SSD in the machine? I wonder if something was acting up on your drive causing it to bottleneck.

Both.

256 GB SSD (Windows and programs) and 1TB HDD (docs and games), plus recently an external 5TB HDD for other & older games.

Both harddisks were already build in from factory and came with the ASUS ROG gaming notebook.

yeah if the OS is on the SSD that shouldn't be the issue then.

probably a driver fault or something then since it sounds like things started cooperating again so just keep an eye on it :)

Hello,

Have you tried running the System File Checker (filename: SFC.EXE) to check for and restore missing operating system files?

I could be totally off but it sounds like it rebooted before some file(s) could be closed fully.  It's a weird problem I've never seen till now TBH.  What does the log say?  Which files did it fix?

For some reason after uninstalling 'Intel Driver & Support Assistant' things are going smooth and okay.

No freezes/hickups or unresponding Windows start button...

Yeah, this Intel software is really a headache and recently it stopped working anyhow, it shows me an update available but it doesn't respond to the update action. Now I am also going to uninstall this garbage software.
