I currently am running an Asus Nvidia RTX 2080 and while I was cleaning under the desk where the computer sits, I noticed that only 2 of the 3 fans are spinning on the GPU. I fired up Asus GPU Tweak II and turned the fan speed up to 100% and the number 1 fan still is not spinning (I lowered them down to 80% where the default was 45%). I have not taken the system apart to investigate any further, but I am concerned by this issue. I know that 3 fans are not 100% necessary, and that 2 should provide enough cooling, but should I be concerned about the fan not spinning? Should I contact Asus about this?

Don't worry about it, mate. Some GPUs have only 2 or less fans on it. You're temps are all right.

When you game, keep close look at temps, see what your max temp is. Or just use Furmark..

I really wasn't very concerned about it, more curious as to why it was not spinning.

It may, through it's software, think you're at a low temp, let's only run 2/3.

IDK, just run FurMark and see if it gets all 3 fans working.

Ran FurMark, fan still did not run, max GPU Temp was 81C

Ran Heaven Benchmark and maxed the temp at 83C and the fan still does not spin up, I will take the system apart tomorrow and clean it and see if that solves anything.

Those are very good temps. Like what Farmeunit said, how long is a RMA going to take...

I'd just leave it as-is. It's not reaching crucial temperatures.

Might want to see if dust is causing it, too..

Seems odd that it wouldn't spin, but can't say for sure.  Temps look fine, though.  From a quick look, everyone says to RMA it.  But with everything going on, who knows how long that will take...

Expand

I might be tempted to start an RMA on it, but if it is working fine, there seems to be no point, yet, and as you pointed out who knows how long it will take.

I will clean it tomorrow and see if there is something blocking the fan. I have another odd issue that has been going on for awhile, my top case fans RGB is not working , but the fans are, so I really haven't bothered trying to figure out what the issue is there.

Well I feel special now! 😛 But really, the top fans are not even visible, so I'm not worried.

If its 53c idle, seems high to me, I have a 2080s with only two fans and it'll idle around 38-45c - Under full load after 20 mins I get around 67c

I'd suggest downloading EVGA Precision X1 (will work on any card) and manually adjusting the fan speeds to 100% and see if you get any movement instead of relying on the card to increase speed due to demand.

Idle temperatures mean NOTHING. Every card has different idle temperatures due to make, what you use it for, and age. We look at max temps under load. As most of today's GPU fans don't run when its on idle.

And he already tried that with ASUS software. I doubt he'll get anything different from EVGA's..

What's safe and what's good are two different things, missed the bit about him already trying through ASUS software.

Pretty sure idle temps can mean something, if you're running at 100c idle, you've deffo got problems 🤣 - Yes I know his system isn't but you can't say "they mean nothing" because they can definitely mean something.

Back on point - it's my opinion that all three fans should be running even if it isn't causing an issue now. I'd RMA the card while you can if it's an option don't sweat it if not.

Improve airflow if your case allows it. What's your intake/outlet like at the moment, are you able to provide a photo?

OK, I took the side panel off and spun  the #1 fan, and it spins freely and I see it trying to spin (GPU -Z shows it spinning up to ~ 200 RPM, then goes back to zero) on it's own but it can't for some reason.

Picture on the left is with the side panel on, the right side is panel off.

@cacoe My system is water cooled with the exception of the GPU, I have 3 120mm fans exhausting on the top of the case, 2 200mm fans on the front of the case blowing in, and 2 120mm fans at the rear for exhaust s well.

Upon further inspection, it appears and feels like the fan is off balance, so that is a defect in the fan, now weather or not I am going to try to RMA it remains to be seen.

These two latest screenshots, are you at idle? Are the fans still set to auto?

Yes both were at idle, no the fans are set to 90%

The issue with the fan is that it is not balanced, so that is a physical defect with the fan, so an RMA would be in order if I were so inclined.

I'd strongly recommend RMA but I understand it can be a slow process.

BTW, with you being in Florida, what's the ambient temp? You running with aircon on?

Aircon is on, still indoor temps are 25-27c outdoor is around 30c at the moment. Just checked with an infrared thermometer and the area where my computer is sitting shows 26.7C

Better to RMA now while you can than leave it until maybe even another one breaks and the warranty is over. I think you'll be fine running with the two fans but like I said, warmer than I'd l'd personally like and there's a chance you're increasing the ambient case temperature as well, but probably not by much.
