FloatingFatMan
Quote A Tesla Megapack part of a giant battery project in Victoria, Australia, has caught on fire – creating a blaze that’s almost impossible to control. The cause of the fire is currently unknown. As we recently reported, Tesla is having a lot of success with the Megapack, a large battery system for utility-scale energy storage projects. The automaker achieved record deployment of energy storage last quarter – thanks largely to the Megapack, which is back-ordered until the end of next year. Tesla’s energy storage products have been particularly popular in Australia, where the electric grid is in great need of stabilization. Its famous “Tesla Big Battery” in partnership with Neoen in South Australia has had a tremendous success that other states are trying to replicate. Neoen obtained a new contract to deploy a giant 300 MW/450 MWh battery system using Tesla Megapack in Victoria. The installation of the giant new battery packs was just completed and the system was undergoing testing when one of the Megapacks caught on fire yesterday: https://electrek.co/2021/07/30/tesla-megapack-caught-fire-giant-battery-project-australia/ Gotta ask, with more of these facilities being built, why are they being jammed packed in so close? Those modules are so close to each other a second is already damaged and could go any second, and there's a high risk of the others going up. Once these things start to burn, it's an exothermic reaction that's virtually impossible to stop, so way more focus needs to go on prevention! Fireproof barriers between each cell, increased spacing between them, and even putting them into sealed rooms filled with inert gases so a runaway fire can't even get started... Not going to blame Tesla here, chemistry is chemistry and modern batteries are not stable, but way more can be done on the fire prevention facilities by the engineers building the place they're kept in., Link to comment https://www.neowin.net/forum/topic/1410082-tesla-megapack-caught-on-fire-at-giant-battery-project-in-australia/ Share on other sites
