RAM question

Recommended Posts

Sure more ram would allow you to assign more ram to each VM, etc.  And in theory allow you to run more VMs - depending on the other issues that could hinder performance.. But if your not swapping out ram to disk, your not short on ram for what your doing..   Maybe his vms are having to swap out, since he limits them to less ram then they need, etc.

But overall if his machine is not swapping out to disk, then his pc is not low on ram..

I sure wouldn't throw more ram into a system, especially an older one - unless the ram was sitting on a shelf collecting dust or something.  Or it was dirt cheap and you had plans on leveraging more ram - like your example of running VMs..

If you are swapping out to disk - then yeah more ram could be a huge performance boost..

Hello,

Have you considered purchasing a full set (64GB?) of the RAM the server needs if you can find it inexpensively, and then selling the old RAM?  If you do not wish to use eBay, there are other services like Craigslist, Facebook Marketplace and so forth.
