Windows 11: how stable and complete is it?

Recommended Posts

With only 2 days before the GA of Windows 11... how stable and complete is Windows 11? [besides the app-store]

It is wise to start the immediate upgrade from Win 10 to Win 11 on compatible and qualifying hardware? Of is is better to "just wait" some more and have Windows 11 all sorted out?

It's stable. But not complete. Around 60% complete if you want an arbitrary percentage.

... and what 40% is missing? :omg:

Lots of small usability features that it appears that they drew a line in the sand for, and just said "we ship without all of this stuff, get it stable and fix that later"

Also Android app support.

I know that the app support didn’t make it yet.

I guess the small usability features can be “missed, to be added later” I guess?!

… what kinds of (little) features can I think about that will be coming to Windows 11 (but are already in Windows 10)?

It's perfectly stable and has some nice features over 10.  It may have issues, but every new Windows OS does.

IMO a lot of people will be better off waiting for the first major update if they have any concerns.

Ive been running it on a computer with an unsupported 7th gen i5-7600 cpu and it runs great! No issues! In one area it's working better than than windows 10 but it may have also been an issue that was fixed with the in place when I did the upgrade, which is when waking up from sleep it now goes BAM to the password but, before you had to wait a moment.

Has happened in win10 too, might just update your bluetooth drivers

To fix button text alignment? I think not. I also verified in Windows 10 that this does not happen with the button text alignment.

I reported this issue 3 months ago!

Yes, burying one's own head in the sand fixes fit and finish every time.

Ahh.  I didn't notice that part.

For whatever it's worth, I haven't seen anything like that yet.

Unfortunately, I don't think its limited to me. I think its just a feature most don't use outside of a work environment, and uncommon even then.

It happens on upgrade or clean install. No scaling is being used.

I would use it, but my comp and my new phone don't like eachother much.

I need the install tool for this, I was hoping it would release a day before or so since its already out on OEM shipped computers at this time.

Grab the 194 iso.

From my experience with the preview builds, I'd say that all the features implemented *work* but there are smoothness issues. For example, File explorer performance in Onedrive directories is a bit laggy, particularly when adding and renaming files or directories repeatedly within a short time span. It's entirely possible that non-preview builds lack some of the diagnostic overhead and perform more fluidly.

Questions.

1. How do I get the taskbar to show labels for all open windows and then combine when the taskbar is full?

2. Pinned apps, way to group them by functionality? e.g. I normally have Photoshop, Paint.net, Illustrator etc under "Graphics" header, VSCode, SQL Server, Visual Studio etc under "Development" header.

You can't without a third party tool. Check out StartIsBack (for WIndows 11) or Start11 from Stardock.

Son of a gun. Those will be the 2 things that would bug me a lot. I can survive but would really hinder my productivity.

Can you create custom toolbars to a folder for example? Can probably live without this I guess.

I assume you mean like the old Quick Launch toolbar? You can with StartIsBack
