OneDrive empty folders

I am having a bit of a disaster. I've been into my onedrive to get some videos from a couple of years ago, browsing through the folders and the structures are all there but every folder is empty. This is not just a mistakenly deleted folder, this is like a search on *.mp4 and delete all the results, not only that, all my photos are gone too. Again folders are all in place. Things like onedrive\photos\weddings\our wedding is empty as is onedrive\photos\weddings\sams wedding. There are 5 weddings we've been to between 2015 and 2017, all photos were in folders like that, all now empty. I purposefully put files in the cloud to keep them safe and now everything is gone and I have no idea why. I've tried on the website, on local clients for my windows PC, my mac and my iphone, all the same result..

 

Can anyone suggest anything I can do?

If I'm not mistaken, one drive isn't so much a backup as it is a syncing tool to all computers. You delete the photo from one computer it deletes it from all of them including one drive. So how many computers was this onedrive account synced to?

it will have been synced to 3 computers, a windows 10 box at work, one at home and my macbook pro. But the files will have only been saved on the win10  box at home. The others I just downloaded as and when since they hard drives were not big enough. That doesn't explain why it has kept the folders and deleted the files out of them though.
