a new secondary build...?

Recommended Posts

I've been dual booting for some time now, Windows for mining and gaming and Linux for everything else. I'm deciding to to leave my main rig exclusively for mining + casual gaming and build a new mini-itx machine for Linux as my main productive. I'm thinking of an AMD with built-in graphics?
What do you guys think?

Current specs: Ryzen 3900x, Aorus Master x570, 32GB DDR4 (4x 8GB, I can use 2 sticks for each build), 1TB nvme, 1TB m.2 ssd

I can recommend this to you: https://store.minisforum.com/collections/all-product/products/hx90

I bought one back in late August, pre-ordered. Got it at the end of September. Might be backed up a little bit, as a lot of people pre-ordered it.

I got the barebone, so I need to add in the RAM/SSD/OS.

It's running the most powerful mobile Ryzen CPU, Ryzen 9 5900HX. Can do up to 64GB of so-dimm RAM, there is a header for M.2, as well as room for 2x 2.5 HDD/SSD.

It includes liquid metal for the paste, and a good heatsink and good ventilation.

I'm just waiting the right time to get my RAM. Black Friday or Cyber Monday.

That brand got roasted hard not too long ago by Gamers Nexus and der8auer.

I wouldn't buy it...yikes.

Regarding the OP ... you could probably build a nice little Ryzen 5700G system for around 700-900 bucks.  Should you?  🤷‍♂️

Jim, that's OLD news. There are many different videos explaining otherwise.

It was fixed from the sample to the finishing product.

Edit: And mine had no residue on the board or case.

Mostly writing and programming in python.

That's interesting...never thought of a pre-build....and this small! Will look into it.

You have linux running on it?

There are other brands available, also. Might want to look into them. 😉

I have Debian working on my system right now. Previously I did load up Mint Cinnamon. Both of them work fine 😁

I will say go for it.

But you'll have to decide whether you want an AMD rig or Intel rig.

Generally, AMD iGP is better for gaming while Intel at media playback.

I'm personally also looking to build something like an AMD RDNA 2 APU system in the future once AM5 is out.

unless you're talking Xe graphics then AMD APUs still blow Intel out of the water. The Xe drivers still need quite a bit of work and are wonky on a lot of titles and emulators too.

plus it sounds like OP is planning to load Linux of some sort so AMD has much better support on that front too.

but yes I'd say that mini system shown above is quite a good deal too

I think you mean Intel Xe graphics!

Also yes AMD support on Linux is excellent I here, better than Nvidia's. No idea about Intel's media playback abilities on Linux though.

I'm assuming it shouldn't be too different than Windows. But I could be wrong.

Got examples that you that are good?

Minisforum ship to Canada for free, which is a plus!!

not worth the wait. it'll be more expensive at first and most use cases won't have much advantage and may run worse depending due to the difference with it putting the voltage chip right on it now instead of the mobo.

heck that alone would make me go for it as not many would offer free shipping like that

Are these expensive?

If I get the barebone, buy the above ram, and provide my own m.2 ssd, that would be CAD $1200 after tax. If I build from scratch might be cheaper..hmm...

Get G.Skill Ripjaws. They are like half the price of that for 32Gb (2x16GB) Think they're at $105 rn.

That and there's not a lot of boards out there that support it rn.

It has to be in mainstream before Linux mess with anything new.

This is what I'm thinking. I'll add my own m.2 ssd, 2x 8gb ddr4 ram, and psu.

I'm not saying they don't have a use. I'm just saying they are phasing out.

Yet it still exists. If there wasn’t a demand somewhere, it would be completely phased out.
