Jim K Global Moderator Posted January 9, 2022 Global Moderator Share Posted January 9, 2022 A New Year, a new thread. You can view the 2021 edition here. The Suicide Squid I enjoyed it ... Margot Robbie killed it (per usual) as Harley Quinn, the walking shark thing was funny. I did feel bad for Starro at the ending. 7/10 Steven P. 1 Share Link to comment https://www.neowin.net/forum/topic/1414417-what-was-the-last-movie-you-watched-2022-edition/ Share on other sites

Dick Montage
Ghostbusters: Afterlife Wow, what a great sequel. It had all the heart of the original, pacing was good, acting was spot on, story was coherent with plenty of call backs. It felt like a lovely tribute to Ramis, and a well deserved entry into the franchise. Absolutely loved it. George P Global Moderator Posted January 9, 2022 Global Moderator Share Posted January 9, 2022 Finally saw Ghostbusters Afterlife last night, 8/10 from me but I'm a big GB fan from the start so all the nostalgia/fan service and specially the hit to the feels in the final act were great IMO. A little more comedy and it could've been a 9/10. BTW I have not seen the girl-power reboot though. +Jester124 Subscriber² Posted January 9, 2022 Subscriber² Share Posted January 9, 2022 I just watch the new Ghostbusters last night and loved it. Finished up the new Matrix movie as well. While the ending could have been better, it was surprisingly good. Steven P. Administrators Posted January 9, 2022 Administrators Share Posted January 9, 2022 Death to 2021 - Netflix link It tried to bring comedy to awful events, so it absolutely did not hit the mark. I miss Charlie Brooker's own year reviews (the last one he did was at the end of 2016). Apparently he was involved with last year's Death to 2020 which I gave a 7 on IMDB, this year he was not involved. My verdict 5/10. PS: I split this year's posts into a new topic. If you're talking about the game with the original cast doing the voice acting and you playing as some no named 5th rookie, then yeah, it's great. It's also canon btw, I always thought of it as an official 3rd movie story wise, while afterlife could be 4th. +E.Worm Jimmy 1 Share Link to comment https://www.neowin.net/forum/topic/1414417-what-was-the-last-movie-you-watched-2022-edition/#findComment-598702941 Share on other sites

It was dire, didn't capture any of the heart of the original and was a generic comedy with a franchise title. It did all of the characters a disservice and played upon really crass stereotypes. And Sony realised this. They tempted to firefight with the "You don't like it because you can't stand strong female leads" argument. Dick Montage
So last night I took a punt on Matrix Resurrections. I think it's only fair to suggest that my opinion was always going to be biased off the back of loving The Matrix, The Animatrix, and then really just disliking Reloaded and Revolutions. I thought this was going to be a massive release, a tent-pole movie... It did not come across that way. Whereas the original had ground-breaking, in-camera effects and genre-defining CG; some of the SFX in this felt like it had the production values of a dream sequence within a Hallmark Christmas movie. The story was simple, which can be a positive, but not in this case as it was presenting itself as somehow "more" within the setpieces that didn't advance the narrative. But what really grated was the way it felt so proud of itself, continuously patting itself on the back and figuratively giving a knowing nod directly into the camera by being oh-so self-referential - it was absolutely cringeworthy and overstated itself. God that one hurt to watch. I liked the idea of putting the events of RE and RE2 together in one movie (they happen at the same time in the games as well) but boy did they manage to crap it all up. So bad. It still amazes me how no one can make a good video game movie when the games have laid out everything for you. Well, actually I think the newer Tomb Raider reboot did a good job. Sure it's no masterpiece in storytelling but it's not some abomination of a film to. Oh man, what a disappointment, and the last 20 mins was just silly and stupid! i enjoyed about the fist 40 minutes of it... then went south! I had such high hopes, because in general, i enjoyed the first 3... 1st one was obviously epic! The first was really something new at the time (to an audience that had largely not been exposed to such concepts within accessible modern cinema). The 2nd and 3rd just spiralled towards utter hyperbole by extending what was essentially a relatively simple, clean story into convoluted mess - but I can see why, studios cashing in and riding a wave of amazingly good reception towards the first. George P Global Moderator Posted January 14, 2022 Global Moderator Share Posted January 14, 2022 Watched Eternals, eh, 6/10 at best. The movie was there just to expand the MCU and introduce new lore to people who don't follow the comics. Jim K Global Moderator Posted January 17, 2022 Author Global Moderator Share Posted January 17, 2022 Eternals - meh, it was alright, I guess. Should have been a Disney+ series, I think. Had real issues with that ending. Spoiler Earth would have effed with a huge marble thing coming out of its core. Mudbound (Netflix) - This had been on my list to watch for a long time. Finally got around to it last night. Very, very good movie. Spoiler The plot ended up being silly imo, so the Eternals go mad if their memory is not wiped after each Emergence, and when they realize this they decide to start ending natural creation/evolution by stopping the emergence. I almost started to wonder if we were going to get a Matrix type ending where the Eternals are afforded the idea of having "stopped" the emergence, but their minds are wiped anyway, that would have been a better ending to the film. And there's more to come eh? George P Global Moderator Posted February 18, 2022 Global Moderator Share Posted February 18, 2022 Just watched the newest Scream redo/sequel, 7/10. They kept trying to fake you out with the jump scares in this one, doing the whole music bit and having as many as 3-4 fake outs back to back. It got pretty annoying at one point IMO. I understand the music is suppose to build tension and grab your complete focus but it's a dumb giveaway that you're either going to get a jump scare or a fake out now. I much rather movies ditch the music and go with more eerie quiet and normal room sounds. I think that works better. +Raze 1 Share Link to comment https://www.neowin.net/forum/topic/1414417-what-was-the-last-movie-you-watched-2022-edition/#findComment-598712789 Share on other sites
