Elvis 8/10

Was never really an Elvis fan but that movie was amazing.

I have a very important question!

Did it have a scene where he was staying at Forrest Gump's house? :p

I haven't read the book and wouldn't say I'm exactly the target audience but my girlfriend wanted to see it and i loved it!!

Just watched Nope,  I'd say it's around a 7, maybe a 7.5/10 for me.  Nowhere near as good as Get Out but also not as bad as Us.    I guess the main difference with what makes Get Out better is that the reveal/twist is held back longer and much bigger of a surprise.  Nope is just, a scifi horror movie.  The score would be lower but the characterisation going on helps it a lot.

Love both actors here in this all too familiar plot, solid performance I gave it an 8.

I've only seen the original one a couple of times as it's my GF's go to movie for Halloween. The first one is pretty good.

This one on the other hand is one of the stupidest movies I've ever seen.

Sunday night viewing

Was tough to watch having been in the social services care system myself, however luckily I am not so old that I had to endure borstal or compulsory military service. I think it was outlawed very shortly before I started my stint in children's homes (1982) but I did know older kids that had been in borstal. Lockups for kids existed in my time as well, although I wasn't in one, my first home was a gated one, which basically meant we weren't allowed out, but there were no bars on windows or locked outer doors.

This film came out the year my sister was born 😛 Sadly, everything about the film was relatable and recognisable. I gave it an 8 because of how close to reality it felt, and was. This is the theatrical version of the BBC version that was banned, and it stars many of the same actors. So a more polished version of Alan Clarke's original.

This was fun, but lost a point due to the cheesy way they inserted references to other Stephen King movies and books throughout the film, which was split into three parts. Why does he insist on reminding viewers that it is a STEPHEN KING MOVIE, LOOK, A BOOK I WROTE THAT THE CHARACTER IS READING HA HA HA! It's just cheesy and lowers the quality. First up James Woods gave a brilliant performance with his quitting smoking segment, and Drew Barrymore did a great job, particularly in the last segment where she is terrorised by a troll! Ted Striker from Airplane! also starred and did an excellent job.

Watched the new Hellraiser today,  I'm a fan of the original 2, so I probably liked this more than your average movie viewer.  8/10 from me though the first act of the movie does go a bit slow.

It was a really good movie, I didn't know much about it going in which is why I won't say much about it here, but it was very well done.

Bullet Train (2022) IMDB rating: 7.4

This was good fun, great action scenes and the fighting was good. I like how it all takes place over the course of a train journey too. I gave it an 8.

Following last weeks screening of Sleepaway Camp, I am following up with the sequels. Last night:

Sleepaway Camp II (1988) IMDB rating 5.5 (Title in UK: Nightmare Vacation 2)

It's a shame they recast the lead character, but Felissa Rose decided her educasation was more important than acting when this came around in 1988, 5 years after the original. It's a low budget slasher with plenty of wooden acting and poor sound editing, but it was entertaining enough to get through. There's nudity (which wasn't in the first film), a couple of the girls expose their breasts a few times, but no full frontal. I gave it a 5.

Watched it last night too. I gave it a 2 ....so dumb. Just wasn't my thing.

Jurassic World... um... 3?

I mean, it was bloody ridiculous, but it took up a bit of time on a flight.

Black Phone

Brought absolutely nothing new to a tired genre.  Remember when Blumhouse were new and different?

I just say that, at least so far, the current decade (i.e. movies released from 2020+) is off to a generally weak start compared to usual standards given we are not far from finishing three years so far as the only ones I have seen worth mentioning...

1.Top Gun Maverick (2022) - 8/10 (but closer to a 9/10 than a 7/10. which currently makes this not much outside of my Top 16 movies. I would not be surprised if this increases on re-watches)

2.Devs (2020) (Mini-Series) - 7/10 (from director of Ex Machina (2015))

3.Beavis and Butt-Head Do the Universe (2022) - 6-6.5/10

-.Zack Synder's Justice League (2021)

-.Wonder Woman 1984 (2020) (this is underrated)

everything else I have seen is a 6/10 at best.

basically there is currently about 28 movies that made the 6/10 or higher standard (i.e. Thumbs Up) from 2020 up through here on Oct 9th 2022. I am not done with 2022 yet, but I don't see things changing much. it's possible some of those 28 movies that I currently gave a Thumbs Up will not hold up on a re-watch though (so some could shift back to Thumbs Down status), but I suspect most will.

p.s. for measure... anything I score a 7/10 or higher is among my favorite movies in general, which is currently only 147 movies (I have seen 2,350+ total movies, which makes anything I score a 7/10 or higher within about my Top 6.3% of everything I have seen). anything I score a 6-6.5/10 makes it within my Top 210 movies. anything I score a 6/10, while nothing special, still makes it within about my top 20% of everything I have seen because about 80% of everything I have seen gets a Thumbs Down. because in a very basic sense for me movies are ultimately broke into two basic categories... 5/10 or less = Thumbs Down (not worth re-watching), 6/10 or higher = Thumbs Up (worth re-watching). although I do separate the gems from everything else though which is where my 6-6.5/10 or 7/10 or higher stuff comes into play. I posted this info since it's puts things into perspective. because some people routinely hand out fairly high scores only to largely forget the movie after enough time passes but for me anything I score a 7/10 or higher (maybe even 6-6.5/10 or higher) is something that stands out for me that ill typically re-watch at least once every few years or so. because I ultimately rate movies based on how much I like them overall, it's just only a very small amount stand out from the pack to be among my favorites.

I also just got done finally seeing Wonder Woman 84,  I think it's got a bad reputation.   It's not as strong as the first one, for sure, but it's not as bad as people said IMO.  7.5/10 give or take.   It could be a 8/10 for some.

...and a 2/10 for others.

Not a movie exactly, but just watched Werewolf by Night. Something quite different to what Marvel is known for and the way they shot it was really cool & spooky. I enjoyed it 8/10.

All Quiet on the Western Front (IMDB) - Netflix

It was a fantastic viewing of the horrors of WW1 trench warfare with men fighting in open land often for no obvious gain.  It was a bit long at almost 2.5 hours.  At one point I paused to go to the bathroom and was shocked to see I still had 45 minutes left.  They could have probably removed some of the "side quests" ... didn't really advance or add to the story IMO.  The scene with the boy and the soldier didn't work at all (cringe scene)..how the hell did the boy get there so fast?  Other than some of the scenes away from the battlefield which padded the run time ... it was worth the watch.

4/5

Werewolf by Night (IMDB) - Disney+

Very short TV movie (about 45 minutes or so)...but very entertaining.  Could have been longer.

5/5
