Registry key issue

I am having issues with 2 conflicting software. One is called phonetraypro and the other is callclerk. I am trying to delete 2 entries of phonetray which are located in the registry which i want to delete but regedit is not allowing me to do so. The path is HKEYLOCALMACHINE/CONTROLSET001/SERVICES001/SERVICES/BAM/STATE/USERSETTINGS/S-1-5-21.....

I tried deleting the key on the right section of the screen and then the left section to no avail.

Is there a safe way to delete 2 entries that pertain to phonetray without causing any issues?

are you getting an error message when you try to delete the entries? make sure you're opening regedit as admin as well or it likely won't let you delete/alter things

I just tried power shell as admin and still had the same errors. On the left side panel i get this error:

Any idea why i cant delete it?

Muck around the registry and your computer is bound to go "bam."

 

There is probably a reason that Windows won't let you delete the key (I'm pretty sure it is owned/locked by SCM).  You probably have to use the sc.exe command to remove it.

 

..but..

 

Have you tried just uninstalling the phonetray pro ... and/or disable it in "services" if applicable (probably phonetrayproservice or something similar....not "Phone Service" which comes with Windows)

Hi Jim, I uninstalled both phonetraypro and callclerk and they are both pointing to this entry: HKEYLOCALMACHINE/CONTROLSET001/SERVICES001/SERVICES/BAM/STATE/USERSETTINGS/S-1-5-21.....

 

I assume I shouldnt touch the key then even though I cant anyways.  and hence the key stating "BAM", as the string states and you as well, will happen to the computer. No services were listed for phonetraypro nor callclerk.

 

I wanted to try a restore point that I created a few weeks ago to get it to work again but I only see entries listed  as this:

 

 

 

 

Is there anyway to find a restore point created to the one listed above? If not, should I assume the only way around this issue is to install windows 11 if there isnt a problem with the modem itself?

No idea what that driver is supposed to be for, but if you're ever locked from deleting something in the registry, explorer, etc. you probably don't have enough privileges. Admin in Windows only gets you so far, there's a point where TrustedInstaller is the one rolling the dice, you'd have to launch a process as TrustedInstaller to be able to do more.

 

That said... I agree with @Jim K, wouldn't go poking around deleting things like these.

I agree with both of you. Hence, the reason I asked the question of restore point. If no go on restore point than windows 11 only?

I'm afraid I don't know much about restore points, but that UI should list the ones available right?

 

Is there any output difference if you run "vssadmin list shadows" from an elevated cmd or "Get-ComputerRestorePoint" if PS?

Looks like those are all of the restore points currently made in that system, you could try going back to the first one, before you installed any of the those programs, the one from 3/9/2022 12:34:11 PM.

 

In any case, what problem are you facing that prompts you to go back?

I installed call clerk maybe a week ago when phonetray wasnt working correctly. I had phonetray for over a year. I use it to zap those bastard telemarketers and scammers. Before ppl state it can be done via phone company in 1 way or another but my way is easier.

First and foremost, never directly tamper with the SYSTEM\ControlSet001 key directly. Use SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet instead.

 

Second, do not tamper with BAM settings. It records faults that apps have caused and are scheduled for fix.

It's nuts having to go out of your way to get rid of those things, damn... I'm lucky I don't get much. The occasional survey, but that's about it, GDPR helped in that regard.

 

But I'm afraid I know nothing about those programs, I've never used them, I hope you get one of them working again at least.

Thx. I think the only way I am going to get either one working again is if I install win 10 again or win 11 unless the older modem i have is causing it. I just bought a new one today and it should be delivered in a week or so.
