chale9466
I'm kind of worried about this in MSCONFIG, I click on the SYSTEM.INI tab and almost everything is tripled if not more than that. I opened SYSEDIT in Start > Run>. This is what it shows in SYSTEM CONFIGURATION EDITOR > C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM.INI: Should this be so large and repeated? Is this why it takes so long to start-up? Should I remove the repeated lines? Could someone give me some input? John Veteran Posted February 16, 2004 Veteran Share Posted February 16, 2004 unless you're running any 16-bit applications, you can delete the entire system.ini file on 2000/xp (Y) at least to the best of my knowledge... if you decide to do this, keep a backup in case you run into problems with some programs. i do know for a fact, however, that windows itself does not need this file  Link to comment https://www.neowin.net/forum/topic/141686-systemini-file-in-xp/#findComment-1739258 Share on other sites
stilist
Gameguy would be correct; just do as he says. XP runs more with the registry than ini's for most system things, I think. You may be right about it slowing down the computer; XP is configured to check for (and process) all files from previous versions just in case - autoexec.bat, config.sys, etc. Link to comment https://www.neowin.net/forum/topic/141686-systemini-file-in-xp/#findComment-1739295 Share on other sites
Bold_Fortune
Just out of curiousity sake. Does it show the same things in msconfig? Link to comment https://www.neowin.net/forum/topic/141686-systemini-file-in-xp/#findComment-1739303 Share on other sites

Bold_Fortune
Here, I just tried this. Try copying this from my system.ini file into Notepad, and save as system.ini. Then delete your system.ini file from C:\WINDOWS, and put the new system.ini file in there instead. Then open msconfig and see if there is a change. You can add you COM Ports and any other stuff you have..once..lol ; for 16-bit app support [drivers] wave=mmdrv.dll timer=timer.drv [mci] [driver32] [386enh] woafont=dosapp.FON EGA80WOA.FON=EGA80WOA.FON EGA40WOA.FON=EGA40WOA.FON CGA80WOA.FON=CGA80WOA.FON CGA40WOA.FON=CGA40WOA.FON Incidentally, loose the ConservativeSwapfileUsage=1 tweak. It doesn't apply to XP. Link to comment https://www.neowin.net/forum/topic/141686-systemini-file-in-xp/#findComment-1739353 Share on other sites
chale9466
Ok I did this and it shows this in Msconfig. Thanks for the help. I just think it was real large and slowed Startup down. +allan MVC Posted February 16, 2004 MVC Share Posted February 16, 2004 As a general rule, XP ignores the win.ini and system.ini files. Link to comment https://www.neowin.net/forum/topic/141686-systemini-file-in-xp/#findComment-1741055 Share on other sites
