Moved motherboard to new case, now no POST, error code 8

Recommended Posts

So I did some more digging and found a few videos and it seems as if that water block is screwed on to tight it will do all sorts of nasty things like short things out.  If you've pulled everything off the board but the power supply cables up top and, on the side, when i say pull that's including removing that m.2 hard drive and that video riser and tried booting and no luck it leaves that water block as an issue or power supply as an issue.

There's no way the water block is the issue. It has not moved since being installed ~3 years ago. I have removed the GPU and riser cable out of the system and the system still shows q-code 8 upon powering /booting.

@Mindovermaster

The Thermal grease that was used under the block is Artic Silver 5, rated for around 10 years or so, it has been 3+ years, do let's stop dwelling on the water block as the issue, I have not touched it since it was installed, so tourque is not the issue.

How do you know if it isn't the problem if you haven't opened it for 3 years?

Even though it is "rated" for 10 years doesn't mean everyone will get that much life out of it. I usually regrease my CPU every 2 years at max..

Because it has run for 3+ years? The temperature would be a good indicator as well, and considering the temperatures have been satisfactory tells me that it's working.

You moved the system to a new case, older brittle cables can crack, connectors can get broken, things that were tightened can get loosened and things that were too tight can be bent, and a small metal shaving in a new case can short out a motherboard.

That being said, it's usually cables, especially power. Start by testing the PSU, do you have a spare?

No, I do have a PSU tester however.

Worth trying, assuming it tests all the cables and loads.

PSU tested fine. I have to wait until Thursday to get more tubing so I can drain the loop and rebuild the system from the ground up, barring that I'm at a complete loss of what the issue can possibly be.

Out of curiosity, how close were the voltages to spec?

Within 1% or so, it fluctuated every so slightly, but I'm running it off of a UPS. On Thursday I will be able to remove the whole board and figure out exactly what might be loose or whatever, I have ordered a fitting so I can make a drain for the loop.

Any update on this issue?

I am fairly certain that the CPU has failed. Tomorrow I am going to borrow my niece's CPU and try it on my board and see if it gets past Q-Code 8, otherwise I am looking at ~$250 for a replacement, considering it has been over 3 years, which is the warranty on PIB's from AMD. Just to cover everything, I opened up an RMA request on the GPU as well, I am waiting to hear back from Asus on it, because it is possible that the GPU is causing the issue as well, as it suddenly is no longer lighting up the LED's on it, but the fans spin up so I know it has power.

I doubt that, but yeah, you tried just about everything, so.. why not.. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Let us know what happens, bro. :)

I will. I also changed the 8 pin power cords from PSU to MB, just on whim as well, the PSU tested fine, so IDK what else to try, nor can I figure out why the act of moving the motherboard into a new case would case the CPU to fail.

As many have said, I think you shorted your board. But any hardware can fail even after a case change, so..

If the board was shorted, then I would not be getting power to the various lights and fans...

A short doesn't kill the board. I've shorted a lot of motherboard and had no problem after.

Something inside your board is just not right. As to what exactly it is, I can't say.

Could be a single wire is obstructed, not allowing you get past BIOS. Tis a mystery until we find out more.

If I had this issue after swapping cases, I would either run it on cardboard out of the new case or put it back in the old to see what happens as I also think there is a short on the motherboard being caused by the new case.

To everyone who thought the PSU was the issue, I have 100% conclusive proof that it is not, my roommate had the same PSU and his just suddenly died. So he took mine, and placed it his system and it is working flawlessly. I have tried building the system just on the box, no change, so the motherboard is not shorting out. On Monday I plan on ordering a 5800X and the replacement PSU from EVGA should be here Thursday or Friday.

OK, so brand new PSU and CPU. Still getting the same q-code 8. So if it isn't the CPU (which it obviously isn't, unless it failed out-of-the-box, which I would be surprised) the only other thing I can think to do is to put it all back in the old case and see what happens. Does anyone else have any suggestions?

Has this been tried? Run it on cardboard to remove any possibility of the case shorting something.
