App to make Video Thumbnails

Recommended Posts

Hello...
I'm using Linux Mint.
I need to use an application that creates thumbnails from videos.
SMPlayer does them, but its just one by one and I have hundreds of videos.
I found these :
https://alternativeto.net/software/vide ... form=linux
EZThumb and Thumbnail Me look promising but I can't find them in Linux Mint Software Manager.
Are they safe to install manually ?
Are there any more alternatives ?
Thank you !

If your goal is something to stream your movies to your devices, then sure plex would be an option.  It auto grabs meta info, and posters and title cards, and lots of other info and displays it a nice easy to view interface.

There are also other options in that area, jellyfin, kodi, emby many others.

If your just looking for something standalone - I haven't used anything like that in years and years.. Once started using plex, there was no need for any sort of local creation of anything.

If your looking for say posters for your movies - https://theposterdb.com/

But seems like maybe your looking for more like what say windows shows you when looking at media files? And using large icons or whatever

Something like this?

as a very simple example of how it would look say in plex

Snip of one of my collections and then info it shows for specific movie - this is all pulled auto.  While you can edit the poster and other info if you like, its all really done for you behind the scenes.

Can't Plex do that? Not sure why you need thumbnails unless you are running it on another system..

(link broken, btw)

Umm, @BudMan?

Here is the link
https://alternativeto.net/software/video-thumbnails-maker/?platform=linux

This kind of application pick up a video, takes many screenshots of the video itself and puts all the screenshots inside a .jpg, like this one

I don't want to stream nothing, I just want to the app to take screenshots of the video and put those screenshots inside a .jpg

Please open the link that I provided in the other reply (the good link)

I know of some for windows like AMT or GDS, but again have not used any such software in years and years.  Most of my linux is cmd line, I only have 1 mint with desktop running on my work laptop.  And I only use it when need to do something that the locked down work computer will not let me do, etc.

Wish I could be more help, sorry.

I might have to re look into these, actually could be helpful in pulling title cards for my home movies and such.. If can get a contact sheet from a home movie - might be easier to pick out say the best frame to use for actual titlecard.  Currently if I don't like what titlecard plex put up for the specific home movie I Just scan through the movie real quick and grab a snap and set that as the titlecard.  But an auto contact sheet creator that says grabs say 20 images from the video with length between the snaps being determined by overall length of the video that could be useful.

After searching around I could only find this https://www.videohelp.com/software/Video-Thumbnails-Maker which supposedly has a batch-create option too.

Edit: I see my suggestion is Windows only, maybe it can run through Wine? Otherwise you might have to look and see if there are some ffmpeg commands you can create video contact sheets from.. eg: https://www.arsouyes.org/en/blog/2021/2021-06-14_Miniatures_videos

I prefer to use an application than commands.

If I can't find something useful, then I need to install windows in Virtual Box, I prefer that than to use Wine, but thanks for trying !

Try this https://www.videohelp.com/software/movie-thumbnailer it says it supports batch mode and a GUI/Frontend is also available.

If that is not good enough you might find another option here https://www.videohelp.com/software/sections/screenshots

Was going to post FFMPEG can extract thumbnails, but you don't want command line.

After a bit of googling...maybe ezthumb which appears to be a GUI thumbnail generator based on FFMPEG.

Edit: I see you had already mention ezthumb in your original posts.  No idea about installing them in Linux, outside of the software manager.   It's on SourceForge so I reckon it's safe

YES !

I can't thank you enough, Steven P. !!!

Movie Thumbnailer worked perfectly !!! In fact, it's the best application that I used until today !

You're my hero :)
