R7 5800X or R7 5800X3D

Recommended Posts

My current CPU is an R7 2700X and all indications are that it is dead. I am looking at buying a replacement and want to go either R7 5800X or the R7 5800X-3D. From the brief research that I have done it appears that the performance increase would be very minimal and would mainly affect certain games that I am not interested in. Currently the price difference is about $50 between the two, but I have been told that the 3D version can not be overclocked, that is not a deal breaker, but I have not been able to find conclusive evidence to say if that is true. So my question is which CPU would be better to buy? My motherboard can handle either so that is not an issue either.

3D can't be overclocked, fail if you'd like to, no advantage for the games you play, you've answered your own question :)

having said that - games you play now - also the overclocking advantage may be trumped by the convenience of just being faster to begin with.

The next question that I would need to answer: Is $50 more really worth it, or wait for the next generation of 3D processors to come out, since Gen 1 will have bugs.

I'd just grab the 5800X deal from here https://www.neowin.net/deals/deals-amd-ryzen-5800x-8-core-cpu-is-nearly-50-off-today-and-loads-more/

it's just too good to miss.

That is what I was thinking of doing, got to wait until Monday before I can order it.

Question, did you update your BIOS recently? Most boards need a BIOS update to get the 5### series working..

I did a new build for my daughter's computer... and I also updated the CPU on my main machine.

I let her have the 3700X and I opted for the 5800X. Typically, when I do a "vs." match, this site comes up. It's a quick way to look how hardware compares. It will get your foot in the door without having to dive too far into 3D/PCMark scores. Especially since you need a license to really use those programs to kick the tires all around.

The 5800X3D in my opinion, is a great CPU.. no doubts. But, alas, no OC'ing.. and you do get bragging rights when it comes to saying, "I owned one of the first '3D' CPUs!" But, that's about it. Looking at it thru this site's eyes, there are some advantages, but not enough in my world.. (and from what you posted, yours as well) to justify having spent more money on options that won't be used or useful.

Now... I know, in a low to midrange budget, $200 may seem a bit much, but if you need the horsepower and have that extra cash, you can easily leave the 7 series behind and grab the R9, 5950X.

And yes... either or, will require a BIOS update.

That is interesting to see. I am fairly certain that I will just go with the 5800X, it's too good of a deal right now to pass on, and the 3D doesn't gain that much more overall performance.
