Rigby
I'm not really sure; just off the top of my head I think somewhere around a dozen ranging from an Atari 800, TI-99/4A, IBM PC/XT, a 486, and a bunch of Pentium 1 to Pentium 4 and Core 2 Duo HPs and Dells. Their purpose is to sit forgotten out in my storage building in case I ever need or want to do anything with them. I probably won't. The only one I actually use regularly is this one I'm typing on now, a Ryzen 7 desktop. Brandon H Supervisor Posted March 1, 2023 Supervisor Share Posted March 1, 2023 I've got 4 active computers at home and 2 that I've retired and are just sitting currently. Primary computer is used as my HTPC in the living room I've got one computer I use as my Plex server I've got an Asus laptop which I don't use too frequently anymore; mostly used now when I need to remote in for work if I can't make it into the office. And I've got my Steam Deck which technically still counts I'll have to get the specs of each once I'm home sometime dead.cell 1 Share Link to comment https://www.neowin.net/forum/topic/1422038-how-many-computers-do-you-have-and-what-is-their-purpose/page/2/#findComment-598802389 Share on other sites

dead.cell
Man, this thread gonna make me feel guilty af, but here goes: M1 Pro Macbook / 16GB RAM / 1TB SSD - Every day travel AMD Ryzen 9 5900X / 32GB RAM / RTX 2080 - Home desktop HP x360 laptop i7 / 16GB RAM / 256GB SSD - Formerly a work PC they let me keep, reformatting to sell ASUS i7 / 16GB RAM / GTX 1060 gaming laptop - Planning to sell this, the Steam Deck is just for mobile gaming M1 Mac Mini - base model for testing purposes Really, my desktop and MBP are the beasts I use and thoroughly enjoy... but the RTX 2080 is becoming hard to keep up with, using a widescreen monitor @ 3440x1440. If I can sell off the two older laptops, I'll likely use it to upgrade the GPU but damn they're expensive... If you don't mind me asking, what on earth are you using 96GB of RAM for? Media editing? Powering the Matrix? LOL! Part of it is my workflow, part of it is bad habit, and part of it is futureproofing because the machine is not upgradable. On an average day I am running: Docker with MSSQL (amd64 arch). Parallels with Windows 11. -Visual Studio 2022. -Beyond Compare 4. DataGrip. Webstorm. Android Studio. Xcode. Rider. Royal TSX with multiple remote machines open. Multiple finder tabs. Safari. Multiple tabs of Warp terminal emulator. --The bad habit is that while I use all of these in a given day, I tend to not close them, so they are available the next time. Due to the machine not being serviceable, excessive and heavy swapping just shortens the longevity of the SSD. There is no longer a discrete GPU option, so the RAM you have is shared. The future proofing part is because of the above, and I expect it to grow/increase in memory usage. At this time, I only use up to ~48-64GB of RAM, so yeah I went a little overkill, but I have room to grow. +Elі Subscriber² Posted May 8, 2023 Subscriber² Share Posted May 8, 2023 I currently have 3 PCs. 1. Old one that I use just to play with Temporary Linux installs. 2. Mini-PC that I use mainly to play VR games with my Quest2, and I also have it as backup in case something happens with my main rig. 3. Main rig I built a few years ago, which I keep upgrading every now and then. I also use this one for gaming with the Quest 2 sometimes if I want to play more intensive games such as Half-life Alyx or No Man's Sky. I guess tablets don't count here, because have many of those lol. Will replace this in a year or two - or just start using the Mac for same purposes too. I guess I could start using the Yoga tablet mode more now that it's getting less usage, would be okay ebook reader? samw61
Nine. We have nine computers... I wouldn't admit this anywhere else other than here..! Images below include all except my wife's laptop! 1. Dell XPS 15 (2020) - Windows 11 - Intel 10th Gen i7, 16GB RAM, 512GB SSD (system), 2TB SSD (storage), 15" 4k Display Primary device for WFH and personal, generally docked to a 27" 4k monitor. 2. Apple MacBook Pro 13 (2017) - MacOS 13 - Intel 7th Gen i5, 8GB RAM (int), 128GB SSD (int), 13" Retina Display. Wifes current laptop going strong (except storage, why can't I upgrade this?!). 3. Lenovo ThinkPad Yoga (2013) - Windows 11 - Intel 4th Gen i5, 8GB RAM (int), 256GB m.2 SSD (System), 2TB 2.5" SSD (storage), 12.5" Full HD Display Previous primary device, still holds its own (unless I'm using Photoshop), so use it around the house as it's much lighter than my new laptop, and it's a touchscreen/pen convertible! 4. Apple MacBook Pro 13 (2011) - MacOS 13 - Intel 2nd Gen i5, 16GB RAM, 256GB 2.5" SSD, 13" Display Wifes old laptop, restored, upgraded and my test laptop running the latest MacOS, my first Apple since the Powerbook 160. Recent battery blowout. 5. Acer Aspire One PAV70 (2011) - Windows 10 - Intel Atom, 2GB RAM, 64GB 2.5" SSD, 10" Display Netbook I bought for traveling, currently setup as a rudimentary NAS and Plex Server running Tiny10. 6. Fujitsu Lifebook T4220 (2008) - Windows Vista/7 - Intel Core2Duo, 4GB RAM, 256GB SSD, 13" XGA Display Early Tablet Convertible (wacom pen only), my sisters old laptop which I used as a primary device between my old 2007 desktop dying and my ThinkPad. Was running Win10 slowly, but now dual booting Vista and Win7 as a bit of a time machine for funsies sake. Running Windows 7, it holds its own surprisingly well, even with browsing! 7. Fujitsu Lifebook S6120 (2003) - Windows 98/XP - Intel Pentium M - 1GB RAM, 120GB HDD, 13" XGA Display My old laptop recently restored, again reverted to Win 98 and XP dual booting time machine with some great old games and software. Remember when File explorer navigated quickly and switching apps took as long as the keystroke?! 8. Compaq Armada 1130T (1996) - Windows 95 - Intel Pentium - 16MB RAM, 1GB HDD, 10" SVGA Display Dads old work laptop running Win95, hoping to get Win3.1 on it too. Not a gaming machine by any means, and a touch underpowered for running anything more than Office 97. 9. Amstrad PC1640 HD20 (1987) - Windows 3 - Intel 8088 (upgraded to NEC V30), 640KB RAM, 20MB HD (upgraded to 30MB SD Card), 12" EGA Display My first PC, recently resurrected with a SD card as a HD replacement (I didn't park the heads when I packed it up 20 years ago). Last month had a power supply failure sadly, in pieces on the desk. DOS 3.2, GEM Desktop & managed to squeeze Win 3.0 onto it, in full EGA colour after a processor upgrade. Solitaire was painful, but the sun stuck it's tongue out! Edited June 27, 2023 by samw61 Added a touch more info.
