Ok, going to flat out tell you that your hardware is ancient.  The hardware you are looking at isn't much better.  The dell is a SFF (small form factor) case meaning its the size of a playstation none of those video cards above would fit the dell.  The Hp is the same basic setup that your system is so there would be no movement in the gaming direction.  My suggestion would be don't waste your money on staying flat, wait until you get more cash to actually move up.

Sadly the budget seems a bit too low to get anything decent (maybe you can strike a deal on something like the RX 6600 and an i3-10th gen).

Here's what I'd do. Save up a bit more, probably something to around $400, and then look for an RX 6600 and an i3-10th gen (12th gen will be even better due to PCIe 4.0 but depends on prices) + ddr4-3000 RAM. That 500w PSU can easily handle this since it isn't very old and there won't be bottleneck. In the meantime, I will just play with the framerate locked to 30.

And also btw, try to squeeze in an SSD if you can.

If he can? I don't think he lives in the 3rd world. SSD's are a must now days. Then again M.2s are way better than that.

There are cheaper versions, unlike Samsung. Crucial, WD, etc.

He may not live in the 3rd world but from his post he doesn't have much money for this PC, We're not all reasonably well off.

Looks like your CPU is pretty much June 2013 technology from a quick look online. I guess it boils down to how well it compares to Intel's as I would say my i5-3550 (which is a CPU from 2012 (which I bought used in 2020 for only $20 to replace my i3-2120 CPU which I had since May 2012)) is still good enough for the vast majority of games if paired with a decent GPU. so if your CPU is in the ball park of mine, a newer GPU would likely help etc.

but as long as you can maintain playable frame rates (i.e. around 30fps or better) that's what really counts and you said "1280x1024" which will help you even more since your below 1080p (1920x1080) already, which is standard a lot of people use, which makes it so you don't need a super powerful GPU as it seems like as long as your about 1080p or lower any decent GPU is definitely good enough as it seems it's mainly when you get 1440p or higher when you really start to need the powerful GPU's, but personally in terms of bang-for-the-buck, 1080p is easily good enough in my mind given the amount of $ you save as having higher resolutions, while might be nice, I still consider mostly luxury stuff that's not really needed. because as a general rule 30fps is playable (maybe even mid-to-high 20's if you don't mind pushing it a bit but if it drops much from here it's going to start to become a problem and quickly, especially if the frame rate drops below say mid-20's ain't quite brief) and 60fps is close enough to perfect since once you reach 60fps things are quite fluid.

basically it will boil down to what your current frame rates are and how much it will cost to upgrade the GPU and whether that CPU is still sufficient or not on whether it's worth investing more $ into your current setup or just hold off a while etc. but, without doing any research myself, what hellowalkman said sounds like a good ball park on what to do.

but 500 watt PSU should be no problem as I got a Seasonic 520 watt and it's fine. it's nearly 10 years old (I had it since Nov 2012) and still works well and I leave my primary PC, which that PSU is in, running basically all of the time. because, off the top of my head, a 500 watt PSU should be able to handle most setups unless your going crazy on nuclear power plant level GPU's etc. basically any reasonably priced GPU's and ones with reasonable power consumption it should be able to handle.

p.s. I got a i5-3550 (2012 CPU tech) and a 1050 Ti 4GB (2016 GPU tech but I had mine since July 2017 as I got that for $135 at the time and shortly after prices started to increase with all of the Bitcoin BS etc) and I can basically play all of the games I like at playable frame rates, which is games from pretty much 2002 until 2020 or so. like with RDR2 (Red Dead Redemption 2) for example I got the graphics largely on Ultra/High with some stuff Medium/Low at roughly 1080p and I am using a unofficial DLSS mod (which is really FSR 2.0) which gives me about 10fps more using the 'Performance' setting on DLSS which don't sound like much but is a decent boost considering my frame rates, while playable, are on the lower side. based on games benchmark without that DLSS mod I was pretty much 28fps but after that, with same graphics settings besides the DLSS mod, it went up to a 37fps which is a worthwhile increase. normally you can't use the DLSS option on GPU's that are not Geforce 20 or 30 series or better, but that unofficial mod, allows it to work on a lot of GPU's. but even all of this stuff aside, I could always lower resolution if I had to, to increase frame rates as while my GPU is nothing special, it's still got some life left in it. but nowadays, at least based on GPU's around the time I got mine, one really needs a 1060 (they got 3GB or 6GB models of the 1060 and I would avoid a GPU with any less than 4GB as a general rule as those with 2GB, while will still work on many games, will be a problem before the GPU itself is outdated) to have some room to breathe today although mine is powered entirely from the PCI-E slot where as a 1060 requires additional power. because if I had a 1060 6GB GPU instead of my 1050 Ti 4GB, I would likely be good enough for quite a few years to come I suspect based on say at least 1080 @ 30fps types of standards since that GPU will give noticeably better frame rates than my 1050 Ti 4GB is currently. so once my 1050 Ti 4GB is running on the edge of the grave(i.e. it struggles to maintain playable frame rates even at lowest possible graphics settings/resolution), that 1060 6GB will probably still be passable in my estimations.

didn't notice at first but that RAM is really bad. I'd rather spend a bit more and get this instead: https://www.newegg.ca/g-skill-16gb-288-pin-ddr4-sdram/p/N82E16820232417

rest of the stuff looks good. :)

Hello,

Looking over the parts you have right now and your budget, my first thought is that you wait a little longer.  In 2-3 weeks, Black Friday specials will start appearing, which traditionally have had the biggest discount for sales on PC parts from all the various online retailers.

Also, you may be able to get a little more money between now and then.  Don't forget, you can sell your old PC parts as well once you have the new PC built and running.

You should be able to reuse the case, power supply, hard disk drives, monitor, keyboard and mouse, while selling the motherboard, CPU, RAM, and video card.  You probably will not get a lot of money for those parts due to their age, but it will be something to help offset the cost of the new parts (motherboard, CPU, video card, RAM and perhaps a SSD).

Regards,

Aryeh Goretsky

the second system is definitely far better. any reason why you're going for a 2070 super and not a newer AMD or Nvidia GPU? Like if I were you, and since this is a gaming PC, i would probably get something like the Ryzen 5600(X) and spend the most money I can on the GPU like a 6800 XT or 3070 Ti. Both are significantly faster than a 2070 super (especially the 6800 xt in non-ray tracing). Here is a 6800 XT for under $550 which is IMO a really good deal.

Ryzen 5 5600 https://www.newegg.com/amd-ryzen-5-5600-ryzen-5-5000-series/p/N82E16819113736 ($139)

Here is TechSpot's article about pairing a Ryzen 3600 with an AMD 6800 (both are a bit slower than the 5600 + 6800 XT combo i am recommending here so expect slightly more performance overall). https://www.techspot.com/article/2175-ryzen-3600-radeon-6800-combo/

as you can see they work quite nicely together.

For that money I would seriously consider getting a games console rather than buying a weak second hand PC. What you have is good enough for e-mail/Office type tasks and anything for the kind of money you're looking at will be very poor in comparison to a modern console (even a Series S).

Personally, if I only had $273 in my bank account I would not be gaming and worrying about the latest hardware. I would be working.

That is a financially dangerous situation to be in. Have you considered using your computer to acquire new skills to increase your income?

I did when I loved this stuff back in the day and got an A+ and MCSE so I could be paid doing it. Then you will have the dough to build what you want. Also learn coding? You can make double what I make doing that easily
