sikhwarrior
Hi all, I have a HP prodesk g6 sff https://support.hp.com/gb-en/document/c06388142, I have bought a rx 6400 as it was low profile and has the ability to run 4K 60hz easily but HP does not allow this gpu to run. Is there a way of getting the gpu to work on this PC or am I better off just getting a support gpu? hellowalkman 1 Share Link to comment https://www.neowin.net/forum/topic/1423340-unsupport-gpu-on-hp/ Share on other sites
Dick Montage
In what way is it "unsupported"? What do you mean by "HP does not allow this gpu to run"? Essentially, when you install it, what happens? Link to comment https://www.neowin.net/forum/topic/1423340-unsupport-gpu-on-hp/#findComment-598777397 Share on other sites
hellowalkman Reporter Posted November 16, 2022 Reporter Share Posted November 16, 2022 see if a newer firmware supports it. https://support.hp.com/in-en/drivers/selfservice/hp-prodesk-400-g6-small-form-factor-pc/27733971 Link to comment https://www.neowin.net/forum/topic/1423340-unsupport-gpu-on-hp/#findComment-598777399 Share on other sites
corrosive23
Could be a power issue. The G6 SFF only has a 180 Watt power supply and the rx6400 requires 350 watts. I spoke to someone from HP and they said this PC only supports about 6 gpus, all old and expensive for what they are worth, what I want to know is , is there a way of just flashing the bios to allow me to use an 'unsupported' gpu On 16/11/2022 at 12:39, corrosive23 said: Could be a power issue. Dick Montage
Again, I ask - what happens when you install it? I don't care what HP say, they read from a script that was written at the time and is outdated. hellowalkman 1 Share Link to comment https://www.neowin.net/forum/topic/1423340-unsupport-gpu-on-hp/#findComment-598777485 Share on other sites

Black screen, no output, remove the GPU and it works fine I can see windows. hellowalkman 1 Share Link to comment https://www.neowin.net/forum/topic/1423340-unsupport-gpu-on-hp/#findComment-598777490 Share on other sites

I would NOT expect the GPU to remain stable with that low wattage PSU if it runs at all. the lenovo probably is exceeding it's certified power limitations on the PSU to allow the GPU to work which could be a fire hazard among other things Link to comment https://www.neowin.net/forum/topic/1423340-unsupport-gpu-on-hp/#findComment-598777518 Share on other sites

Or have they increased the power for pci-e? Link to comment https://www.neowin.net/forum/topic/1423340-unsupport-gpu-on-hp/#findComment-598777527 Share on other sites
hellowalkman Reporter Posted November 16, 2022 Reporter Share Posted November 16, 2022 What CPU does your ProDesk 400 G6 have? If it's the i9 or the i7, then there is definitely not enough power for both CPU and GPU. Though I doubt power is the issue here. I think it's simply a prebuilt being a prebuilt and the firmware really won't support anything other than those four cards. also if you have the UHD 630, you can try going dual channel if it isn't already. while it is no way comparable to an RX 6400, you will definitely gain a good amount of performance.
