New WD 8TB My Book External for Christmas

Recommended Posts

Hello All

Should i have tested it with Western Digitals Software prior to using it?   as already did a few Macrium Reflect Images to it, but i can always redo those if need be, if i jumped the gun and started using it too soon lol.

Probably best if i did decide to test it fully, to set it up on 8 Core\16 Thread Desktop machine as think would take ages on Laptop machine

If it's new, there's not much you need to worry about it, mate. I never thought twice about checking my 1.5TB MyBook before I used it.. I just, used it. You probably have a 5-year (or more) warranty on it..

1)SMART tests. 'short' test is a quick one that only takes about 2 min. you can run the 'extended' test if you want but it will take a while.

but I think if it's connected via USB, you might not be able to run SMART tests as I think you will generally need to connect it directly to a motherboards SATA port for the SMART test to run. because I know if I have my hard drives connected to a basic SATA PCI-E controller card (which my boot SSD is and 4TB Seagate) the SMART tests are greyed out on Linux Mint's 'Disks' for the drives connected to that. but if I connect them to the motherboards SATA ports then the tests can be run. I would imagine with USB it won't work either without physically removing the hard drive from the external enclosure and connecting it to the PC's motherboard temporarily to run the quick SMART test. but if this voids warranty, I would probably at least try the FULL format then to get some feel of the hard drive that it's at least in half way decent running order if that completes.

if you are not in a hurry...

2)Full format.

p.s. when I got my 6TB HGST, which was 'renewed' (so I got a good buy on it for only $60), I ran a 'secure erase' on it and that took pretty much 10hrs to finish and then I ran a SMART 'short' test and then pretty much started using it.

Yeah i might at least run the Full Format Tomorrow, and In Morning Short Test i think  just to be on safe side,

Not in a huge hurry as i do have secondary gaming laptop i can use the following morning if was still running.

As my  8TB Seagate drive i never ran a full format with that one when i won that one in a Twitter CES Contest in 2019 lol,   this one may when im more awake lol, probably not tonight gonna set it up to do that, as kinda tired now, but maybe tomorrow night i'll work on this

I may be the only one but every new storage device I purchase I perform a full disk wipe using MiniTool Partition Wizard 7 pass then I create a partition once the disk wipe finishes...

new drives have no partitions anyways as there is abosultly no data on the drives so no idea why you would bother with doing that

If you are buying a Dell/HP computer, YES, a full wipe would help. But a new HDD, it doesn't manner.

Unless you want to do a sector check on the drive before putting it into use.
