+Warwagon MVC Posted July 28, 2023 MVC Share Posted July 28, 2023 So for my birthday this month, I ordered a new file server case. Up to this point, I had been running my file server out of a regular PC tower case. All the hard drives were so hard to get to and upgrade that I loathed doing it. This was my old setup. I had it in a washroom in the basement and the opposite side of the case was facing me. So I would always somehow have to get it turned around and laid down, then mess with all the screws and wires Just to replace a drive. This new case should make it much easier. SilverStone Technology RM41-H08 4U Rackmount Server Case with 5 x 3.5 Hot-Swappable Bay and 3 x 5.25 Bays with USB 3.1 Gen 1 RM41-H08-x https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0922FZQFW?psc=1&ref=ppx_yo2ov_dt_b_product_details I "Think" you can even at some point in time remove the left side and put another bay in. All I need 5. Instead of putting ugly stickers on every bay, I just put a sticky on the bottom in the order of the drives, so I know which one is which. Update: 7/27/2024 So it's been 1 year owning this case, and I can say it was one of the best upgrades I've ever made. I went into the bios and enabled hot swappable on all the SATA ports. I can now dismount them in windows, pull them out, and replace them. Since then I've swapped the low-power ASrock J3710-ITX motherboard with the one that used to be in my old couch computer. It's so much faster. I recently purchased 5 Refurbished: WD Ultrastar DC HC530 14TB server drives for $106 each. Installing them was so nice because of this case. Ran all 5 through a sector test, which took 24 hours. 1 drive had bad sectors about 5% into the scan. Returned it for a refund, the other 4 passed with flying colors. I would still recommend this case. hellowalkman and goretsky 2 Share Link to comment https://www.neowin.net/forum/topic/1431801-my-new-file-server-case-arrived-long-overdue/ Share on other sites

goretsky Supervisor Posted July 28, 2023 Supervisor Share Posted July 28, 2023 Hello, A very nice upgrade. What are the specs on the server's hardware? The board has 4 ports and i'm also using a PCIE to Sara card. theefool
Looks nice. Though, I went the route of buying a 1-U rack mount synology NAS. I sometimes wish I went with your choice. Enjoy! goretsky Supervisor Posted July 30, 2023 Supervisor Share Posted July 30, 2023 Hello, Those ASRock miniITX boards are nice and actually work quite well. I used a couple of them in my work lab for installing desktop versions of Windows. Perfectly adequate for that, so I'd imagine they would be great for an unRAID server, etc. Regards, Aryeh Goretsky +Warwagon 1 Share Link to comment https://www.neowin.net/forum/topic/1431801-my-new-file-server-case-arrived-long-overdue/#findComment-598839443 Share on other sites

goretsky Supervisor Posted July 27 Supervisor Share Posted July 27 Hello, Was there any noticeable dust build-up in any areas after a year of use? If so, any challenges in getting rid of it (tight corners, drive cages obstructing access, etc.? Regards, Aryeh Goretsky Well, it lays flat, and it's on the very top of a shelf in my server room, so I haven't looked inside. I would assume it's pretty clean inside. I'd have to disconnect everything and take it down to inspect. When I pulled the hard drives during the swap, I did look inside the bay and it looked clean, as did the drives I removed.
