jnelsoninjax
My Windows drive has two partitions, and the one (C) where everything default installs to is running out of room, so I took 100GB of the second partition and now have 97.7 GB of unallocated space. I want to give that space to drive (C), but the option to extend is greyed out. Is there any way to fix this? Mindovermaster Global Moderator Posted July 28, 2023 Global Moderator Share Posted July 28, 2023 (edited) Did you try using GParted? That Unallocated partition could be a hidden partition, like for recovery. The weird thing Windows does.. No, I just used the built-in windows disk management, and no, the unallocated is one I just created, it is not a system reserved Link to comment https://www.neowin.net/forum/topic/1431814-trying-to-expand-a-partition-but-the-option-to-extend-is-grayed-out/#findComment-598839280 Share on other sites
Jim K Global Moderator Posted July 28, 2023 Global Moderator Share Posted July 28, 2023 You can't do that with Windows disk management since the C partition and the unallocated partition aren't adjacent. You'll have to use a third party...like Mindovermaster suggested. Mindovermaster Global Moderator Posted July 28, 2023 Global Moderator Share Posted July 28, 2023 Yeah, use GParted. You should be able to move it. dwd999
The problem may be that windows expects that 635mb Recovery Partition to be located at the very end of the disk. Not sure how you managed to get it located between the C and F partitions but it's location there is messing things up. You might be able to move it to the end of the disk and move the other partitions in front of it but there's no guarantee that would work. You may have to either leave things the way they are or completely reinstall windows. If you want to have your downloads separate from windows its usually best to use a separate disk. goretsky and Mindovermaster 2 Share Link to comment https://www.neowin.net/forum/topic/1431814-trying-to-expand-a-partition-but-the-option-to-extend-is-grayed-out/#findComment-598839291 Share on other sites

spaceelf
Partition Wizard can do some mucking about better than Windows tools. spaceelf
Of course the easy way is make a new partition or use an external drive, copy ###### to that, then wipe F, extend C, remake F. Barney T. Administrators Posted July 30, 2023 Administrators Share Posted July 30, 2023 I've used GParted many times and it really works well. goretsky and Mindovermaster 2 Share Link to comment https://www.neowin.net/forum/topic/1431814-trying-to-expand-a-partition-but-the-option-to-extend-is-grayed-out/#findComment-598839453 Share on other sites
