Of course it has a higher failure rate. It's older..

Actually, WD Blue SA510 just came out in 2022.

It replaced the older WD Blue.

The old WD Blue was very reliable, so I am not sure what Western Digital changed with the WD Blue SA510

EDIT:

Western Digital knows about it

WD Blue SA510 SATA SSDs Critical Firmware Update Available

EDIT 2:

Apparently, unlikely the original WD Blue, the WD Blue SA510 is also DRAMless and has worse performance than the original.

With all the attention on the M.2 NVMe SSDs these days, M.2 SATA SSDs are getting harder to find.

Yes, M.2 SATA SSDs are still available, but there aren't many models, and many of what is available aren't reasonably priced.

yeah, I agree. Hardly surprising though. Happens almost every time some tech is close to becoming obsolete.

Surprisingly, 2.5" SSDs are still plentiful when they are even older than M.2 SATA SSDs.

You can use an M.2 SATA SSD to 2.5 in SATA Adapter.

the problem i have is i have no spare sata ports, i bought a pci-e m2 adapter but for the sata part of it to work it must be plugged in :/ so now im just getting a usb 3.2 enclosure for it as usb3.2 should be enough bandwith for my m2 anyway

Hello,

I noticed this earlier this week when looking to upgrade some systems with older X79 and X99 chipsets that have one M.2 NVMe and one M.2 SATA slots on their respective motherboards.  While not particularly speedy by today's standards, they can be inexpensively equipped with multi-core Xeon CPUs when makes them useful for things like hosting game servers.

I was looking for some 2TB M.2 SATA drives to populate them with for this purpose (the M.2 NVMe slot is for the OS), and as you noted, there are not a lot of great options available today.  There are 2TB Samsung 860 EVO M.2 SATA SSDs available, but they are selling for quite a premium--$100 or so over the cost of a 2TB WD Red M.2 SATA (~$150) , which is what I think I'm going to go with for these systems.

Regards.

There is the WD Blue 3D 2TB for $109.99

This is the original WD Blue 3D, not the new & crippled WD Blue SA510

Hello,

Thank you for sharing that link, @Mockingbird.  I've ordered a couple.
