Surface Laptop 5 Buying Advice

Recommended Posts

Hello Neowin,

I strongly consider buying a Surface laptop, version 5, or perhaps the one coming in September.

15" MacBook Air is also an option.

For anyone the owns any surface laptops, is Windows Modern Standby broken on them as well?  How good is the battery? Does it wake up in the bag, start to do updates, and fail to go back to sleep like the other laptops sold by a third party?

Thank you,

Andrei

What specs are you looking for? There a reason you "want" a Surface?

MacBook Air is good for battery life. But I don't know if you like MacOS.

On the newest Surface laptops, it shouldn't have all the problems.

Surface laptop 15" with 16GB of ram. I want an alternative to MacBook air on the Windows side, with the full build quality of a Mac and no custom drivers/bloatware from factory.

I've seen the surface laptops being very well built, I'm just afraid of modern standby being broken on them too.

Why do you want to pay top dollar for a laptop where the specs lag behind?

Surface or Macbook huh? So the OS is not really a factor?

At the moment, I have an Asus 12th Gen Alder Lake H.  It has many features, a gorgeous screen, dedicated graphics,  good trackpad. What it is missing is build quality, battery life, a lot of bloatware apps that are required to manage the machine, driver problems, won't stay asleep (tried disabling everything related to power management and device manager), keyboard not great, a lot of custom apps and drivers available only in the original factory Windows image that's being used to reset the machine. Slowness after waking up from sleep and the list goes on...

Umm. You can download the drivers from their website.

And you don't need "their" bloatware. Every Laptop I get, I wipe it.. New, fresh Windows install. (In this sense I would get 10, not 11)

If you don't like the keyboard, you can always use an external one, right?

All laptops can and should have a clean Windows install done so that takes care of the "bloat".  Download only drivers from the laptop support page that are actually needed. OEM apps are a hard no for me but could be exceptions for certain gaming utilities which doesn't appear to apply to you.
