xp1ode
Ok so here's my small problem, i have a pic to show to make it easier to understand. I want to view files from "comp2. Laptop" to "comp. 1" and vice-versa. i am able to see the two other computers connected to the linksys router, but i cant view the laptop, i can't see both computers connected to the netgear router for that matter. I have some files in the laptop that i want to transfer to my "comp.1" and was wondering if is possible for me to share the folder where the contents are in the laptop and view them from my computer. I know there are other ways to transfer file such as crossover and burning cds, but since i do this often is it possible for me to accomplish what i am trying?? if anyone can help or if you need more info please be kind enough to reply, i'd really appreciate the help.. Laptop = Windows 2000 pro Comp. 1 = Win xp pro (simple file sharing off) Link to comment https://www.neowin.net/forum/topic/143596-some-router-to-router-help/ Share on other sites
liar2
i believe with that setup, both of those networks are under different subnets. I'd recommend replacing the second router and using a switch or a hub. I could be wrong about this, so I'd wait for some more responses. markwolfe Veteran Posted February 24, 2004 Veteran Share Posted February 24, 2004 You *might* be able to set your netgear router in some sort of "bypass" mode. Basically use it as a simple multiplexer, no DHCP serving... Exactly what I was thinking. Just set the Netgear Router as a "Bridge". ;) Link to comment https://www.neowin.net/forum/topic/143596-some-router-to-router-help/#findComment-1766127 Share on other sites
Symbiotic Hat
Give the netgear a static address outside of the Linksys's DHCP scope. Make sure that the cable coming from the linksys is plugged into the WAN port on the netgear. Turn on the DHCP on the netgear. Put your netgear on a different subnet than the linksys. wait, no come to think of it you can't do it without a better router w/ more interfaces. get a hub Link to comment https://www.neowin.net/forum/topic/143596-some-router-to-router-help/#findComment-1766135 Share on other sites

liar2
perhaps find a way to disable to disable the DHCP server on the netgear router. i don't have a netgear router myself, and can't explain how to do it. but by disabling the DHCP, this *should* turn that router into a standard switch. PsychCom
if the netgear is operating the same way as my trend net this is how you do it: dont use the uplink port. put the cable in one of the other ports and you then only use the switch capability of the router. and offcourse disable dhcp on the netgear. markwolfe Veteran Posted February 24, 2004 Veteran Share Posted February 24, 2004 Ummm... If he connects from standard port to standard port between the routers, they won't be able to communicate with a standard cable. :pinch: He needs to use the uplink on the Netgear to talk 'up' to the Linksys (which will be serving DCHP in his setup). Now, how to set up the Netgear to just 'pass thru' data as a simple hub, I don't know. There has to be a configuration option there, but I don't have a Netgear. :( Link to comment https://www.neowin.net/forum/topic/143596-some-router-to-router-help/#findComment-1767193 Share on other sites

aldo
Personally I'd just buy a switch or a hub... it's going to be very complex otherwise as 'cheapo' consumer line networking stuff really doesn't play with each other welll... atomicski
I have the same setup and had a problem with it but now it works fine, heres what you have to do. Turn DHCP on, on the linksys router, and assign the netgear router a static ip, then turn off dhcp on the netgear. Take an ethernet wire from any port besides wan on linksys to any port on netgear besides wan. It seems strange not to plug it into the wan port, but for some reason it works for me.
