Intel Management Engine Interface; what does it do? Update? Y/N

Recommended Posts

On CCleaner it's mentioned that my Intel Management Engine Interface needs updating to version 2336.5.2.0

Currently on my system is: 2210.2.80.0

Intel's site mentions 2216.16.0.2805 as latest version

Microsoft's Update Catalog lists states 2334.5.1.0 as latest.

So... what does this Intel Management Engine Interface do? Can I install/update from Microsoft's Catalog?
Or just leave it as it is...?

Thanks.

Quick analysis on my system states: "This system is vulnarable".

Which security risks are there on my system?
ASUS doesn't has an update UEFI (motherboard) update. Does this mean I cannot do anything about it?

Or should I go with the Microsoft Update Catalog file?

Hello,

The Intel Management Engine is a tool used by enterprises to remotely manage their fleets of PCs.

I did not see any updates for it when I looked at your laptop's information at https://rog.asus.com/laptops/rog-strix/rog-strix-g-g731-series/helpdesk_download/, so I would suggest reaching out directly to ASUS support to see what they suggest.  I would not recommend trying to update this component using either the Microsoft Update Catalog or any third-party tools since it is firmware, and installing the wrong firmware could result in a non-usable system.

If it a your device (not a work device) you may be able to in to the bios/uefi and disable the functionality to help lessen it being a target for attack - if the firmware is out of date and not getting a proper firmware update from the vendor.
