Zelda, The Only?

Recommended Posts

I've been thinking on this a lot.

Is Zelda the ONLY game that doesn't name the main character, Link?

Mario ### (lot of versions)
Tomb Raider
Luigi's Mansion
Donkey Kong
MegaMan #
Sonic #

The list goes on and on..

I know a lot of people who mistook Link for Princess Zelda.

Has there ever been a game that didn't start with the main player? Or am I forgetting something?

When I was younger, my parents bought us a used copy of Ocarina of Time which had a saved file on it called "David". I assumed the main character's name was David and didn't know it was Link until I was a little older and heard other people refer to him.

My first PS2 game was Dark Cloud and you can name the 6 characters you get in your party. The main character's name is Toan (pre-filled in unlike in Zelda games) but you can change it if you want. I don't think you can change the main character Max's name in the sequel (two great/quirky early 3d jrpgs if anyone's interested).

I'm not really sure if this applies to other jrpgs (or jrpgs/rpgs in general considering the nature of roleplaying games) like early pokemon games where the main character's name (Ash I guess) is Red and the rival (Gary) is Blue.

If we're speaking more strictly to Action Adventure games (with platforming and puzzle elements sprinkled in), I also cannot think of any others

Edit: just remembered Katamari Damacy where the main character is just the prince who I'm not sure has a name.

Links name was mentioned in the NES manual. But I see what you were saying most JRPG 'S have a namable save file but some like Dragon Warrior/Quest or Pokémon will change the in-game text to match your save name.
