ROG CROSSHAIR X670E HERO BIOS 2007 Not Updating

Recommended Posts

I have the ROG CROSSHAIR X670E HERO with the BIOS number 1905. (07/02/24)

When I first got my motherboard, I updated the BIOS at the time to a newer one that was available. I completed this update using the 'EZUpdate' part of AI Suite 3. As there had been a new BIOS released a few days ago (2007), I decided to update my BIOS.

I downloaded the BIOS and used the supplied program to change the BIOS name, as per the instructions, something I have done many times on many Asus motherboards. So I went through the very familiar update using the 'EZUpdate'. When it got to the restart, which it does automatically after you agree to update, the PC shut down, which Is normally what it does. It is then supposed to boot again and go into the BIOS and start processing the new BIOS. But it didn't start up again, I waited a couple of minutes and nothing happened.

When I booted the PC, it botted normally, going to the log in screen and then to the desktop.  I tried the above again, and got the same result. So I went to the motherboard page and looked for the the updates to Ai Suite 3, which I found and downloaded it. Uninstalling the old version and installing the new version, the new version, didn't have the 'EZUpdate' part installed. Doing a few searches, it would appear that this isn't installed as it isn't compatible. Now is this incompatible with the my motherboard (even tough I have updated the BIOS on my present motherboard at least three times previously using 'EZUpdate) or the BIOS I'm updating to isn't compatible???

The only other option is to copy it to a fresh USB drive with no folders on it, only the BIOS file correctly named 'CX670EH'. I entered the BIOS and went to the EZ Flash Utilitity and navigated to the .cap file on the inserted USB drive. On clicking the file, I was asked if I wanted to update the BIOS, YES. Then it said I wouldn't be able to roll back the BIOS if I continued, I answered YES to continue. The BIOS then appeared on the screen as the one that the old BIOS was updating to and the progress/process bar appeared at the bottom of the screen.  Almost instantly the PC shut down completely. The progress bar hadn't even started to move!

I believe when this happens, it means that the motherboard isn't happy with the what your doing and shuts down to protect itself. But I hadn't done anything that was wrong and it is the right BIOS for my motherboard and downloaded from the correct Asus webpage for my motherboard. I had also renamed the downloaded BIOS with the program provided, as I had done many many times before.

Here is the details:

ROG CROSSHAIR X670E HERO BIOS 2007

Version 2007
13.13 MB 2024/04/18

"Update AGESA version to Combo AM5 PI 1.1.7.0 patch A to support next generation AMD Ryzen™ processors.

Before running the USB BIOS Flashback tool, please rename the BIOS file (CX670EH.CAP) using BIOSRenamer."

I have no idea why I can't update, using this method, or why the BIOS won't update at all. I know what most people will say, if the motherboard is running ok, why mess with it. It's a fair point but, I do like to have everything up to date, including my BIOS.

Does anyone know why I can't update to this BIOS, is there something wrong with it from Asus end?? Or should I just wait for the next BIOS update and try that one, as it will have superseded the one I can't update to?? Only problem is, I might be in the same situation??

Any help would be great, cheers.

Sounds like you've tried all the obvious steps, if you've not updated in a while one of the updates last year was a TPM firmware update hence the warning about not being able to roll back. About the only thing I can think to suggest is to make sure the BIOS is reset to factory settings before flashing the new BIOS - backup your settings first if you've changed a lot just in case!

Hello,

Off the top of my head, I am thinking either a thermal or a power issue of some kind.  The system specs in your signature mention a liquid cooler being used, so I am wondering if perhaps it is not connected to the CPU_FAN connector and the firmware update aborts because it thinks there is an overheat issue.  Is there anything attached to the CPU_FAN connector on the motherboard?  If not, does plugging a spare fan into it and then attempting to update the BIOS (UEFI) firmware work as expected?
