Hello,

Long story short, I use apple phones and never touched a phone which uses android.

I’ve bought a new Samsung phone for a family member, with iPhones I know things to turn off etc but not a clue for android things.

Are there any settings that I need to enable/disable for better usage and limit tracking etc?

Thanks

What kind of tracking are you concerned about?

What kind of data limits are you trying to put in place?

I have an app called My Data Manager to track my network data.

Nothing in particular to be honest, I know on IOS you can disable tailored ads etc which is a setting somewhat hidden, I’m guessing android will have similar things?

Also with iOS if an app requires permissions to like camera etc, does android have everything open access to start with? Is there a setting which needs to be enabled so its most restrictive by default?

thanks

I'm not sure about tailored ads. As far as I can think, that would be a per-app and per-account setting rather than something you set in the OS. So you'll want to check the Google account on the Play Store for "personalised recommendations," and check under the settings for the Samsung account that you might have created (I say "might" as I've had my phone for many years now, long enough that I have forgotten if it was a requirement to have one or not).

@i_was_hereis right about app permissions. When you open an app, it asks you for permission to access things like the camera, microphone, storage. It asks you for each access, so you don't need to accept everything if you don't want it to access a particular thing.

Awesome thanks, sounds pretty straight forward enough.

I’ll be setting it up next week so I’ll be able to have a look then

Feel free to give me a shout (PM or a mention in this thread, or either of those as applies to Neowin's Discord Server) and I'll be happy to help where I can. But yeah, it's a simple enough process to get the phone set up.
