Male birth control applied as gel to shoulders works faster than other methods, trial shows

Recommended Posts

A male contraceptive that is applied as a gel to the shoulder blades once a day works faster than similar injections and is safe and effective, new trials show.

A contraceptive gel that men rub on their shoulders to lower their sperm count is safe, effective and starts working more quickly than other similar methods, new research shows.

The gel lowered men's sperm count to the threshold deemed effective for contraception within eight weeks on average - faster than the nine to 15 weeks seen with male contraceptive injections.

Oh neat! Although personally I'm terrified of a pregnancy, so I would probably still use with the condom. But I guess there would be no harm in doubling down. And it would be handy for those times where you might find yourself..."caught off guard."

gel? shoulder blades? seems like there's a more direct method that would work with a gel 🤣

Yea I'm a little puzzled by the shoulders thing too.  *looks down, calls poison control*

Birth control always should have been more focused on men. But funny how, when it does, it’s a nice gel to rub on - not a pill, implant or coil.

Quite a bit of blood flow in that area and the upper arms, and a large surface area.

toxic masculinity and such is the only reason it hasn't. there was a male birth control pill too but it didn't take off because it caused the same hormonal swings as the female pill and men didn't want to deal with it ...

So basically, the guy doesn't get full control of whether they use this kind of birth control, because last time I checked, you can't massage your own shoulder blades... So you're at the whim of your partner...

No arguments from me there.  In fact my wife wasn't on the pill for several reasons, but the key one was it made her overly emotional, which she didn't like, so I suggested that she didn't have to use it if she didn't want and we'd use other means instead.
