Is 128-GB RAM more than enough?

Recommended Posts

If you need the RAM, then use the RAM! Things like video editing and other things eat up RAM like no tomorrow.

There's no such thing as "too much"

Model? What are you using it for?

Usually there’s deprecating returns after 32GB, if you’re gaming or just browsing the web it’s a bit of a waste.

Gratz on your new toy tho, I love spending money on shinies too lol

Long story short, I got into a pedestrian (I was that peddy!) accident and broke my elbow last Nov 2023. Had to endure through hell of surgery and therapy and all. After I “graduated” therapy (I’m perfectly fine right now! No worries! Hehe)  last January … Decided to get my parents involved in the lawsuit. Turned out I won. So bing bang boom, here I am with the tech upgrades. Oh and don’t worry abt the hospital bills - I got that paid off in full! Yay!  😁

This is a very odd thread. Feels a bit boastful…

There's nothing wrong with being happy with a purchase. I know I've harped on to my friends about my new laptop, although that's because I had my previous laptop for 8/9 years so it was really showing its age, and then I had to wait about 9 months for this one to arrive. With all of that anticipation, I now want to show it off!

It is a boastful thread. Then comes the question. Should you fell envy for it? That is up to you. You have to remember though, for each one that boast of something, there is another person that can do the same in a much more diminishing way.

E.g. Just one of my camera lenses amounts the price of all that has been shown here. But Iḿ very well aware that there is people whose cameras amount almost a car, therefore I keep quiet.

Still, I legitimately think that one should not aim to compare and rather, is best to congratulate them.

What do you plan to use the laptop for? it's got more ram than my home server and gaming PC combined!

It is crazy the amount of ram... I have 32GB in my dinosaur desktop machine and it can run video editing software with no issues.

Dick wasn't saying you shouldn't be happy with a purchase. But why post it on a forum?  I would never post on a forum a question I already knew the answer to.  Is 128 GB enough for a dumb laptop? Of course it is; the question is asked and answered immediately.

It's enough for a server, for a laptop is overkill.

I completely agree. The way of showing off a new machine was not the way that I would have done it. Indeed, there's my review of my laptop when I got it, none of the questions about if there was enough RAM just to turn around and show off what I have.

But when we get new kit, we react in different ways. I'm not adverse to it. 🤷‍♂️

Hello,

I have the same laptop, although with a slightly different configuration.  It's a good workhorse laptop for things like hosting multiple VMs, testing software, and so forth.   It is big and heavy, though, so I would recommend getting a good quality, comfortable backpack to carry it around in so you distribute the weight equally across both shoulders.  I'm using a Tom Bihn Brain Bag with one of their Cache padded pouches (model 17B) to carry mine in—it works very well for this purpose.

I dunno, Im able to tap about 80GB of the 96GB of my laptop's ram any given day. It wasn't that long ago I could tap 128GB. Pretty easy to do when running VMs and docker containers.

I just upgraded my desktop to 128gb from 64gb the other week. I have a Ryzen 9 5900X with G-Skill Ripjaw V 3600 4x 32GB and a MSI Gaming Trio 3080TI on a Gigabyte Aorus Elite Wifi.
