ZoneAlarm Free Firewall shows as installed Firewall but it's not

Question

Basically, I had tried ZoneAlarm Free Firewall ages ago briefly then uninstalled it as I found a better option. However several system Info programs as well as my VPN log still list it as the installed firewall program.

Detected Firewall products: "(name = ZoneAlarm Free Firewall Firewall, state = 262144 [disabled up-to-date])"

I've searched the registry, but for the life of me can't seem to figure out where it's pulling this information from?   I really just want to remove this entry so the vpn log shows the correct information. Any ideas where to look?

I haven't used it myself, but Revo Uninstaller is supposed to do a good job of uninstalling everything that the installed program put in place. And apparently the free version of the tool does what you need.

Here's a video review from JayTwoCents:

Hello,

Zone Alarm hosts a manual uninstall tool for download at their website at https://download.zonealarm.com/bin/free/support/download/CLEAN.exe.  You can try using that.  I also found some installation instructions at http://download.zonelabs.com/bin/free/beta/cleanuninstall.txt at another one of their websites.

From looking at the discussion at https://support.zonealarm.com/hc/en-us/community/posts/24010809650971-ZoneAlarm-Antivirus-Firewall-Pro-NextGen-does-not-uninstall-cleanly, though, you may be better off contacting their technical support for assistance in manually removing the software.

I would try all of these before restoring to a third-party tool.

So I was able, after much searching, to solve the issue. It turns out it was due to a corrupt WMI repository

Run: cmd

At the "Dos" windows prompt:

C:\user\{user account name}>net stop winmgmt  (Enter)

cd %windir% \system32\wbem  (Enter)

Ren repository repository.old  (Enter)

cd\

C:\windows\system32\wbem>net start winmgmt  (Enter)

Once this was done, after a reboot, the ZoneAlarm entry no longer showed in the VPN debug log file.
