Windows 24H2: Error 0x C1900101 - 0x4000D installation failed SECOND_BOOT phase & MIGRATE_DATA operation

On my gaming notebook (ROG, see sig) I try to install Windows 224H2 update.
My other notebook had no issues on installing 24H2 from the Media Creation Tool USB.

I used both the Windows 11 Installation Assistant, as well as the Media Creation Tool (on USB). Both without success.

The error I got is:

 

I read that this might have to do with some drivers, but which I one?

I have  Kensington fingerprint scanner, but uninstalled it to make sure this wasn't the case?
I also have all USB-devices disconnected from my ports.

Any suggestions?

How much free disk space do you have?

 

Run chkdsk /R (I think that's the switch).

Run the tooi with run as administrator privileges used to get issues in the past with out doing that

chkdsk /r did fix some issues.

I have 140 GB free disk space, so I think that should be enough...

Let's try again after the chkdsk on installing this 24H2 update.

I`d also run sfc /scannow and DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth

Maybe also run the Windows Update Troubleshooter.

Hmmm, have you tried doing an in-place upgrade by mounting an ISO?

You can download the ISO, double click on it (it will mount) and then run setup.exe

I have created a (bootable) USB via de MCT. Not an ISO specifically.

Maybe that's the last resort...

As a last resort, is there anything preventing you from making a clean install?

Yes, installing everything all over again, like office apps, games and alike.

I'm not like into canary builds.

If it doesn't work... I'll try somewhat later in October/November. It's not that I can use AI/Copilot and everything. Just the basic optimizations that 24H2 brings, might be beneficial.

Just to give you an update... the (mounted) ISO did work 

Apparently there IS a difference between these three methods on the Media Creation Tool page on updating Windows 11 to 24H2.

Two of them resulted in errors & rollbacks (Installation Assistant, as well as the Windows 11 Installation Media on USB), but the ISO did work. Very strange I might say, since you'd expect them to be same in end result.

I've also had problems with the Media Creation Tool in the past.
