Two brands of RAM in 1 notebook: advisable?

Recommended Posts

I have DELL work notebook with Samsung RAM.

Can I put another 16 GB module (eg Crucial) with same speed (4800) and DDR5 in it?

Pricewise it’s the best option. If it performs (maybe slightly less than a dual module)… that’s OK too. I just need some extra -cheap- RAM-upgrade.

If I remember correctly, there's no harm in doing that. But you will be limited to the lowest common denominator. So your better stick of RAM can only perform as good as your lower stick of RAM.

Maybe I've misremembered or technology has changed since I last looked into this though...

Umm.. what?

It's a Dell notebook. And for some reason I get the feeling that the maxx out in princing & expensive service level addons, and not specially on quality and speed.
I'm not really a big fan of Dell (for business).

The reason I ask, he never said anything other than DDR5 and the speed 4500..

Second thing, are you running 2 RAM slots? If no, why are you running single channel. And if you are just replacing one, with a higher GB, why not replace the 2 sticks?

Hello,

DDR5 memory modules run in dual channel mode, so a DDR5 SO-DIMM would operate with 2×32-bit channels, versus 1×64-bit for DDR4.

It's 1 slot with Samsung 16 GB memory DDR5  PC-4800.

There's 2 slots [so 1 still available], so I guess 1 additional 16 GB module (with same specs) makes the total RAM 32 GB.

Well, all RAM run in single or dual channel. As KiddingGuy below says, he has only one RAM stick.

Yeah, it's just that anyone would know to use dual channel. That's all. Unless your job couldn't afford it..

The only reason you were using single channel is if you only have 1 DDR4/5 slot. Some lower end laptops are like that.

But, alas that, it should work fine :)

We could have maybe done with that information at the beginning...

An additional 16GB DDR5 stick of RAM @4800 should be fine regardless of the manufacturer.

You'll end up with 32GB of DDR5 @4800.

But depending on what your intention is, I would wait another couple of weeks and save up to get 2 sticks of DDR5 at a higher speed.

Yes, you'll be fine.

DDR5 is dual channel (what goretsky posted) ... doesn't matter if you have one or two sticks.  It isn't like DDR4 and prior...

Hello,

Sorry, I was unclear:  A single DDR5 memory module always runs as dual channel.

Thx. I ordered an 16 GB DDR5 @4800 stick.

@Nick H.I get you, I would do the same on a notebook I’d own. This is a work notebook, so this is the most affordable and cheapest option for me to get 32GB (since my employer won’t pay for this extra RAM unfortunately, however our IT dept says I could plug it in)

I wasn't aware of that.. I just always thought 1 stick meant single channel.

This came as a surprise to me as well, but @goretskyis correct, even a single module will run in Dual Channel Mode
