dualloop
Hi, I have a really odd issue that I cannot seem to resolve. My PC will power itself off and then back on again after around 2 hours, from what I can see in event log. Event log only lists Kernel-Power and no other errors or critical events at the point of it powering off. It’s becoming difficult to troubleshoot as you need to leave the PC for around 2 hours to see if the issue is resolved. The strange thing is that it will happen when the PC is left idle with nothing running, it does also happen when gaming. I have swapped out the PSU, thinking it was a power issue, but this didn’t change anything. I have run Memtest86 at 6700MHz with no errors. It did produce errors when run at 7000MHz. I have also re-installed Windows 11 Pro 24H2 to rule out a software issue. Intel default setting in the BIOS is set to performance and I have also lowered the RAM speed to 5600MHz. I have seen online the issues with 13th gen i7 CPUs but can’t see any way that I can test if it is the cause. Can anyone suggest a program that I could run for this? I’ve also seen some posts online where users have seen the new Windows 11 24H2 update causing reboots. Has anyone here experienced this? Mindovermaster Global Moderator Posted November 11 Global Moderator Share Posted November 11 That does sound like a CPU (power?) issue. As you read. Try running Prime 95, and see what happens there. Try installing Linux Mint to a USB Stick and run off that. You can run it with out hurting your system. If you don't get the same scenario, we know it's a Window's issue. Ive reinstalled Windows 11 23H2 instead of 24H2 in case the latest update is the issue as I can’t remember if it happened before the update. I’ll try to run Linux Mint if it still powers off. if it is a power issue, I assume it can’t be the PSU? It was brand new installed this morning. Ive only ever run Prime95 once. Under load, will it stay on, will it shut down, will it thermal throttle, etc. It will test your CPU on 100% load. iui4
Have you tried out a completely different outlet? To completely ruling out power issues? It definitely sounds like hardware/power issue for sure. I never rule out the very basics Try using only RAM stick Disconnect unneeded connections from your system for it to just power does it stay on pass two hours? Are all standoffs are all in your case for the motherboard? Possibly short BIOS up-to-date? Are temps good? Give intel burn test a try while monitoring temps https://www.techpowerup.com/download/intelburntest/ I'm sure I'm probably forgetting some other basics stuff, but I'd start there and try anything else you could possibly think of that you haven't yet. This isn’t a new build and this has only happened recently. Bios is up to date Prime95 max temp on one of the CPU cores was 86 degrees. I have recently re applied compound to both the CPU and GPU. The PC restarts even when temps are in the 30s and 20s. iui4 1 Share Link to comment https://www.neowin.net/forum/topic/1448775-pc-switches-itself-off-and-on-again-after-around-2-hours/#findComment-598946162 Share on other sites

Jose_49
By any chance, do you have Intel's microcode update for the 13th gen? The 13th and 14th-gen processors had microcode issues that were patched in August. As iui4 mentioned, check if you have your latest BIOS update, even if you never had issues like these in the past. Only Power to the Motherboard and CPU take everything (or disconnect un-needed cables SATA, GPU..etc) out and let it run... this is definitely odd to just happen out of the blue, but this is what I'd do personally if this was happening to my PC. Start reconnecting all the other hardware 1 at a time to rule out the issue. Time consuming, but these are the troubleshooting steps I'd take. The fact that its been working- and just started recently happening is what's difficult to pinpoint the issue now that this information is out there. These are all solid hardware components you have. One thing that stands out and might be controversial and this is specific to your case "NZXT H7 Flow" really NZXT cases in generally while good to look at and I'm sure they've fixed their supply issue- hopefully. I had an NZXT case that completely destroyed my mobo- they look nice but, I'm sorry I won't use NZXT cases anymore. That's just me though- and other people that also had similar issues. Intel has fixed the issue (or at least claimed to) with microcode 0x129, which is available with a BIOS update. The damage from excessive Vcore is irreversible, but the microcode update should prevent further damage to the processor. dualloop
So I have had a response from Intel who have supplied me with two images for recommended settings which are attached. i have made some of the changes but I don’t appear to have all these in BIOS. im also not sure how to set the power delivery profiles. should this worry me? Ive also lowered the core voltage slightly and fingers crossed, it seems, to be ok. Once you get the replacement processor, update the BIOS. Or better yet, get a full refund from Intel then sell the motherboard and switch to AMD.
