Windows 11 ARM - Raspberry PI - AARCH64

Recommended Posts

Hi guys,

Hope your all well and ready to have a lovely Christmas.

Just topicing in about running Windows 11 on Raspberry PI.

Has anyone had any good amount of success with this or have some sites that recommend this at all?

I'm also looking for comprehensive guides on running Windows 11 via USB stick, or guides on creating decent AARCH64 / ARM64 usb boot discs.

Does anyone have any thoughts on how to achieve this?

If someone could please let me know, it would be greatly appreciated.

Many thanks

Kind regards

Window IoT ran fine on it but it wasnt' a full blown OS... not sure you'd have all the instructions needed or drivers to make it work on a Pi as a full blown OS.. There has been some success on a Pi 5 but it has a lot of problems still.

Have you looked at this project? https://worproject.com/

Have you checked if your Raspberry Pi image supports AARCH64 or ARM64?

I found this guide on how to install arm Windows 11 on a raspberry pi here: https://raspberrytips.com/windows-11-on-raspberry-pi/

It also lists the hardware requirements including a usb to install windows on. From what i understand you may have difficulty installing it on older pi models.

Thank for helping out guys and thank you for your replies.

To answer "Neufuse", yea I've tried "worproject" and "woa-deployer" but still had problems. Just not easy to try and sort out. Surprise surprise.

To answer "Pololy07", the image I downloaded from Microsoft's website was an AARCH64 ISO download, so its gotta be supported by Microsoft. Uggh talk about a pain in the bum.

To answer "Satukoro", yea I've tried everything. I've tried using bootloaders, worporject, flashing the image directly to the NVME disk using a NVME to USB convertor. It just won't boot. Its such a pain in the neck >.<;

Thanks for your knowledge and help guys.

Hope you've all had an amazing Christmas.

Here's to 2025 in a few days :D

I got a Raspberry Pi 5 for Christmas, so I've been taking a look around on what projects I could use it for.

First off, neither Windows nor Raspberry Pi officially support Windows 11. That means that if something goes wrong, the amount of support you would receive would be limited.

According to this article, while it is technically possible to install Windows 11 it is a huge PITA and will come with restricted functionality of the Raspberry Pi.

The general consensus on the Raspberry Pi forums is that, while you can decide to go through the headache of getting it installed, you shouldn't bother unless you're just doing it to say that you were able to.

Out of interest, why do you want to run Windows 11 on it? As mentioned above, I've been looking into all sorts of different things I would be interested in doing with my device. Installing Windows 11 on it is definitely not something I would want to do.

Thanks Nick.

OK, if its not possible to get Windows 11 put on it, is it possible to get VMware ESXi.

If anyone has a comprehensive guide on how to install this, it would be greatly appreciated.

I need a through guide as I've tried installing with just the base image, but it doesn't detect the Raspberry Pi's NIC.

I have to use a USB adapter which I'm still fiddling with trying to get working.

Many thanks

Kind regards

Yep, as mentioned in the article I linked to:

To be honest, though, the OS is still quite limited. Only a handful of simple games will work. It also doesn’t support sound and there are no Wi-Fi drivers available. Ethernet also is a no-go.

To be sure, there are workarounds for those last two problems. For sound, a USB sound card can provide you with audio. You can also get the internet up and running by USB-tethering your Pi 5 to an Android smartphone. So, you needn’t miss out on surfing the web.

It is simply not a device designed for Windows 11.

Setting up ESXi is possible, but again it has its challenges. The author even mentions having similar difficulties compared to the first article I linked to above regarding network adapters being unrecognised first time round, although he does offer the workaround of using a USB WiFi adapter.

Again, perhaps it would be useful to understand why you want Windows 11 on the device?

As for ESXi, I'm gonna try running it on an Intel NUC i7-6700hq with 64gig of ram instead and see how I get on.

I could be wrong, but I'm pretty sure you won't have any problems getting that up and running. For starters, the hardware wouldn't be ARM-based which is one of the big headaches you have getting Windows onto a Raspberry Pi.
