Question

Hello,

This is the definitive Best Backup Software of 2025 official thread.

It covers both free and commercial backup software, as well as those built into or bundled with operating systems.  Use this as a starting point for researching back-up software.

The previous year's thread can be found here.

If your choice of a back-up solution is not listed, please choose the appropriate Other option(s) and specify in the comments.  The poll is multiple choice, so if you use more than one solution, you can select all of those.  Be sure to mention which ones you use in the comments.

Regards,

RESCUEZILLA - THE BEST AND 100% FREE

Rescuezilla lets you perform backup, restore and recovery actions, even if you aren't able to boot into your regular operating system. It does not matter if you use Windows, Mac or Linux. It doesn't matter if you can't even login. Download and write the ISO to a USB stick, and reboot your machine. Your computer will load a complete mini operating system with a point-and-click user interface into your computer's memory without writing any information to your hard drive.

Rescuezilla was forked from Redo Backup and Recovery (now called Redo Rescue) because it had been abandoned for 7 years. Rescuezilla is more than a trivial fork: it has been carefully rebuilt from the ground up to be fully compatible with the industry-standard Clonezilla.

I've been using Macrium at home and work for 15+ years with success.

I tried Hasleo and had a few fails.

I am currently testing Veeam at work. Looks promising but time will tell.

At home I'm using Arq to backup my documents and family photos to Backblaze B2. Data is encrypted with a key I've created, which neither ARQ or Backblaze ever get to see. I decided on ARQ as I control both the encryption key and where my data is backed up to.

At work I'm using Veeam - it's tried and tested and can reliably backup everything I require it to.
