The ethics of ad blocking

Recommended Posts

Well, drive by downloads, popups, java/flash ads all require mobile code. Have that blocked and you only get the regular old animated gifs.

besides, if companies didnt put malicious behaviors or try to run java ads all the damn time, i would disable it.

Exactly. An advertisement, in and of itself, is not bad. It's the sinister methods that they are shown and the mal-ware/spy-ware that usually comes along with them that need to be blocked.

By the way, is anyone...

Damn, and I thought ads were never targeted.

Looks like you posted that in the nick of time. I have been sooo nervous about discussing it. Damn it, now I have the confidence to ring my entire family about my genital herpes. My Gran is going to be soooo proud that I've come out.

i don't care about ads...i just don't like it when they "pop out" unexpectedly. that should not happen as computer usage differs from tv where if something suddenly pops up it can create a problem in one's work flow or typing something.

Pop up ads are like a digital version of someone handwriting a paper on a desk and then a text book suddenly starts floating in between you and the paper so you can't see your hands and you can't see what you're writing any more and you suddenly lost your workflow.

regular ads are fine. you see them. they are there. you know where they are. and you can minimize the internet browser. i don't think using a computer means the need for ads. you pay for your computer when you buy it. as for websites i can see they need ads, but the don't need pop up windows that are separate from the webpage

Ads on TV can't go as far as the ones on the computer. Not much room to abuse TV ads. Unfortunately, they do find ways to do it. Raising the volume during the commercial, putting in subliminal messages, using somewhat pornographic images to sell something. My point is that there are a lot of compainies that will do nearly anything to get you to pay attention to their ad.
