Greenstein
ESPN.com news services At 70, Hubie Brown can still coach a shrewd game of basketball. That obviously has not gone unnoticed. The Grizzlies coach, who led the team to its first 50-win season and the first playoff appearance in the franchise's 10-year history, will be named the NBA's Coach of the Year, according to the Memphis Commercial Appeal. The newspaper also reported Tuesday that Brown beat out Utah Jazz coach Jerry Sloan. Brown is expected to be presented with the award Wednesday. Memphis finished the regular season 50-32 after a 28-54 record the previous season, becoming the ninth NBA team to follow a 50-loss season with 50 or more wins. The Grizzlies trail the San Antonio Spurs 2-0 in their first-round playoff series 2-0. Game 3 in the best-of-7 series is Thursday night.
